On the revert reds, TWICE this week I had revert reds happen to me (once I rolled off the dots too soon and the other I wasn't in the right place and forgot I wouldn't get my signal that way) and BOTH TIMES the motorists at the cross streets waved me to go through the intersection anyway. It was very nice.

I think that the first time (Kenilworth/Holland) the guy saw me swear up a storm when I saw it revert red lol

@casseagull What's the point of this concept again?

If a bike is on the dots and it starts changing the signal for the bike and they leave too early...what's the logic in immediately reverting to red?

Is the person supposed to have teleported into the aether or something? I can't figure out what issue it's trying to solve.

@ksawatsky It's trying to solve traffic not going vroom vroom fast at every possible moment forever and ever and that is all.

It's not even about bikes and the dots - it's a mechanism that is set up for cars that bikes also use and basically meant to stop the light change when a car is only on the sensor to turn right. Bikes are just also part of the mechanism because it's easier and cheaper than doing it properly (streetside buttons)

@casseagull @ksawatsky IIRC, the city argues if drivers have to stop but don't see why (e.g. the person has already biked across) then it will reduce compliance with traffic signals. But that logic isn't applied to non-drivers, so those walking and on bikes may develop the same level of contempt towards traffic signals that the designers of said signals have for them.

Oh dear, right turns on red strike again. So this is another thing that would solved by just completely stopping that practice.

All turns should be banned while there's a walk signal on. I've had way too many close calls even when the driver had a green light (but not the right of way, but many drivers think green = go no matter what.)

@ksawatsky @dairpo @casseagull agreed. Too many drivers act as if turning right on red means you have priority over people driving straight on green, or walking in the crosswalk. Absent an enforcement blitz, we've proven we can't be trusted with doing right on red safely

@plantarum @dairpo @casseagull

Right on red is also just one of those things that was allowed in pursuit of the never-ending goal of trying to get vehicles to get to their destination as fast as possible no matter the other consequences. (see also, slip lanes)

None of this "Vision Zero" BS across North America matters one bit until vehicle throughput is demoted to be far far below concerns like safety, usability, and accessibility.

@ksawatsky @dairpo @casseagull yes! we have a number of oblique intersections in my neighbourhood that act as 'sliplanes', and they're terrifying. Sherwood at Carling is a nightmare, it's a design that absolutely encourage drivers to accelerate around the corner right in front of a busy store.

@casseagull I'm actually a little surprised people were that nice. Most of the time they don't even notice cyclists.
