Why would Apple's brand be at risk? Their products are manufactured in China, chips designed in Israel. They keep breaking laws and bullying their partners, tell us that developers leech off their success. They monopolize the market, nanny their users. They kicked the leading game engine developer off their platforms over a dispute over an (illegal) clause in their contracts. Their prices keep going up in a cost of living crisis. And they tell us it's for our own good.

The only real alternative, Google, is the biggest advertising company in the world; an even worse choice in my opinion…
@stroughtonsmith I don't know if this so much is an Apple thing as some are making it out to be as much as it is an already beaten down and exhausted creative community seeing an ad like that about a tech product. We'll see!
@stroughtonsmith And all the rumors say that they’re going to be adding a technology to their new OSes that is widely reviled for abusing creatives’ intellectual property and damaging the environment.

I think this too is but a preview of the backlash iOS 18 might face when less-terminally-online folks find out it incorporates ‘AI’. I expect the drama will start around WWDC and ramp up until September
@stroughtonsmith Actually makes me think that if Apple takes its (usual) approach and incorporates AI into specific features that are very targeted, rather than just slathering LMMs everywhere, that it might escape the worst of the backlash.
Then again, perhaps Apple is simply not able to escape backlash at this point.
@jsnell I have a feeling people want a reason to be angry (especially with the weaponized upswell of angry internet people™ ahead of the election once again) and I'm sure they'll find it
