It seems like editing one's answers on Stack Overflow is not an effective protest vote, but perhaps upvoting https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/430135/where-is-the-opt-out-option-so-my-answers-dont-get-used-by-openai could be one signal that would be legible to the site's owners

FWIW, I am in the top 1% of Stack Overflow participants and I am likely to never ask or answer another question on the site if it's going to be intentionally turned into machine-generated sludge

@glyph An alternative to StackOverflow that looks reasonably feature complete, but seems lacking for an audience... https://codidact.com/

@glyph hard same, but I can't even be bothered to tell them.

@Yhg1s The site has been in decline for quite a while but this does feel like crossing a final threshold.

@glyph this isn't procgen please don't call this procgen ._. there is nothing "procedural" about LLM snake oil. Procgen is a word that already meant something different, and I'm terrified that everyone is going to start thinking the kind of art I make is just some inhuman ai bullshit when it has nothing to do with neural nets or machine learning and I spent an obscene amount of time building it.

@aeva I would quibble with you on the semantics (I have seen beautiful procgen art that did use linear algebra and/or neural networks, that was not sludge, and I do think that LLMs are "procedural") but out of respect I will avoid calling it that in the future. I don't want to do it the respect of calling it "GenAI" since it is not AI either, and "LLM" doesn't cover the equally-problematic image or song generation stuff, so the terminology continues to be annoying…

@aeva "linear algae", maybe

@aeva for now, updated the original post to "machine-generated"

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glyph that'll do. "linear algae" is cute though.

If that's not a universal and timeless truth, I don't know what is.

(Especially given how much any useful terminology almost immediately ceases to be useful due to con artists finding it profitable to co-opt such utility.)

encukou,

@glyph I've blanked out my avatar & user name, let's see if that's allowed.
Maybe they'll ban U+FFA0 next.
