Yeah, I do this. Usually with my wife and we make a thing of it. And vice versa on her birthday of course.
We have not always, as there was very little economic room for non-essential purchases when the kids were young. That feeling of not having to be super responsible with money on a particular day of the year is kinda nice.
On a deeper level, I suspect a Lutheran upbringing has something to do with it as well..
