I spend a lot of time around straight cis men in my hobbies and sometimes when I see someone in the wild i don’t know and I’m like ‘is that this model of this thing’ and their eyes get bigger and it’s like they want to marry me but then they find out I’m super gay
The last boy I ever dated was like ‘I’m really happy you’re gay and you found someone etc but how will I ever find another girl who likes soccer’ and that’s when l learned most straight men just want a ‘dude’ (like themselves with their own hobbies) that looks like a girl, which is, as they would say, kinda gay
@skinnylatte Yeah a lot of them do, though they just want the girl to be of slightly lower intellect (however they define it) than them. A woman that's too smart would be intimidating
@skinnylatte as a straight guy myself, you’re not wrong… though I would place a lot of the blame for that on the insane and restrictive gender roles society imposes on us all.
@joshourisman my audiophile hobby stuff is the worst. Mainly I don’t want to be perceived at all by the men in it. ‘My wife doesn’t understand why my speakers are ugly. Can women ever be into sound?’
@skinnylatte without defending some of the true assholes in the audiophile community, I really do think that a big part of this is that, as men in America, we’re very much taught that we’re only allowed to care about aesthetics in certain circumstances. And with the exception of machines (and especially cars), visual aesthetics tend to be coded as feminine. A speaker is supposed to sound good, only a girl would care how it looks (and you certainly wouldn’t want to be perceived as girly!).
