I made the mistake of pointing out that a new AI app that scrapes YouTube videos was ethically questionable on Hacker News and a dude is just non-stop replying about it.

“Whaddya mean taking the content of a YouTube video and summarizing it in full threatens creators?! It promotes the video!”

I have been around the internet a long-ass time. Promotions don't pay my bills

@ernie I'd subscribe to a service that summarizes youtube videos in full.

@rubinjoni Then pay the creators to do it for you.

I see this a lot these days, where people decide to create a business that does something like take a newsletter and turns it into a podcast. Did they ask the newsletter owner? No. They just assumed they’d be OK with it.

Like, don’t get me wrong. I like cool new things, but we should be asking broad questions about how the originators of information are going to feel about it first, rather than later.

@ernie Yes, I’ve heard people reading newsletters in podcasts, and I find it alarming!

@grammargirl There was a startup that announced something like this, and I told him to remove my newsletter from his list. I’m done with folks building things off of the IP of others without integrating creators into the process somehow.

In the AI era, if you are not immediately raising questions like that, you need to stop. Now.

The guy is repeatedly making the case that because users allow embeds of their videos on random websites, it is OK to pull the text content of the video and present it as a list.

My last response to him was this:

> Stop bringing up YouTube embeds, it is literally 0% of my point. I literally do not care.
>
> The problem is 100% the use of LLMs to pull the content in an unsanctioned manner.

@ernie This is why I think hbomberguy's latest video was such a solid run at the material: everybody arguing over whether AI is a "plagiarism machine" and Harry's over here making the extremely solid point that humans don't know (or, more likely, are being extremely disingenuous about their ignorance) they're plagiarizing other humans.

@paninid @nilay_patel When I hear Ezra Klein talk about anything on Reply All, it forces me to question my career choices. I fear if I listen to his podcast, I will fall into a deeper crisis

@paninid @nilay_patel (To be clear, it’s because he’s so brilliant about what he talks about that it forced me to reassess a core belief.)
