Wow whee - just got an email from to say that my yearly subscription price changed from $30 to $50.

Crazy stuff. I get that inflation is a thing; but the site is entirely user contributed data - from the scrobbling of the tracks to editing data and uploading images and links in the database.

And they sell that data to other companies. And haven’t updated their website or apps in so, so, long. The whole thing is pretty much in maintenance mode.

@matt @okwithmydecay I received an email regarding the price increase last Friday. And, to be fair, they did build some new features around monthly/yearly listening reports. But I also agree that it’s hard to justify the new price. :/

@herrherrmann @okwithmydecay Fair enough; I might need to check my spam folder... dare I venture in there. 😅

@matt Have you considered MusicBrainz?

https://listenbrainz.org/import-data/

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@andyc Yes! I’ve always used MusicBrainz - both contributing data and using Picard. I also imported all my listening data from Last.fm into ListenBrainz 🧠

Now I moved the $30 a year I give to Last.fm over to MusicBrainz too 🥹

@matt Why run the two in parallel ? Did last.fm give you better networking, recommendations or forthcoming gig details ?

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@andyc Well, I have been using Last.fm since it was Audioscrobbler and merged with Last.fm. Really early days.

So, I heavily used it. The events was a great part of it for me, and editing and updating artist bios and release data, etc.

You don't get that stuff on ListenBrainz. And the design is more database like on MusicBrainz than it is on Last.fm, which is more consumer-friendly.

@matt@oslo.town avatar

@andyc Most of the apps I use to listen to music dont actually send tracks to ListenBrainz. That part is still hard. Its easier to submit to last.fm and then, every once in a while, log into LB and import the data from Last.fm

@matt I stopped subscribing when last.fm stopped discussion groups and streaming. These days it's just with a shoutbox - most of the proper features have gone

okwithmydecay,
@okwithmydecay@en.osm.town avatar

@jonpsp @matt I have fond memories of , and still scrobble. However these days, I find a worthy successor, and @metabrainz is regularly adding new features

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@okwithmydecay Thanks for the tip - I semi-regularly jump into ListenBrainz and import all my latest scrobbles from Last.fm, but I will start to look for the apps I need to make it my default go-to service.

There is no official communication that I have seen from on this price hike. The only alert came from PayPal.

Their last blog post was January 2014. https://blog.last.fm/

Update: I see they posted a locked thread in their support forum 3 days ago. https://support.last.fm/t/changes-to-last-fm-pro-pricing-may-3rd-2024/91945/1

The Last.fm website still says I will be charged $30 but the PayPal subscription has definitely updated to $50. #LastFM

A screenshot of PayPal saying Last.fm will take $49.99 on the next billing date.

@matt
It's been a while since I checked my account. Looks like I have a 20 year anniversary next year 🎂

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@kristian Mine is since 22 Oct 2004 and I have paid every year since about 2006. This has triggered me though.

@matt
Paying user for 18 years? That's a long time. Has it been worth it?

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@kristian I understand it costs to run a service, and so was quite happy to contribute. Between the years of 2004 and 2010, I used the site an awful lot.
