For the Canadians: My feature on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government, eight years in power, went live this morning. Worth reading, I think! #canada #cdnpoli #trudeau https://thewalrus.ca/justin-trudeaus-last-stand/

@justinling A good piece that sums up the problems with Trudeau, though obviously Poilievre would be an even worse nightmare and many Premiers are very obviously being obstructionist. Right wing premiers are actively destroying housing policies that protect renters and preventing cities from getting federal funding (Trudeau's plan to go around provinces is necessary) and dismantling provincial healthcare systems. Trudeau would be better served by talking openly and honestly about what's really going on politically, even if straight talking goes entirely against his whole personality (but leaving a mirage of "straight talk" to Poilievre is a terrible political strategy and makes Trudeau seem less like a serious person).

@justinling

I've seen this behaviour time and again in the world of corporate bureaucracy. What matters isn't that anything is achieved but that it's appropriately actioned, that the forms have been filled out, that the proper channels have been followed, and that there's an excuse. The content is irrelevant. Instead, it's an endless insecure game of hot potato where every player's goal is to not be the person who was found to have done something wrong. And while they play, homelessness rises.

"For all its celebration of markets and individual initiative, this alliance of government and finance often produces results that bear a striking resemblance to the worst excesses of bureaucratization in the former Soviet Union or former colonial backwaters of the Global South."

-David Graeber, The Utopia of Rules

BarryCooke,

@justinling
Now put 10 years of Harper under the same microscope, for equal comparison.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@BarryCooke I did do that! (Eight years ago)

BarryCooke,

@justinling Great! And what does the comparison tell you?

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@BarryCooke That governments should be judged on their efforts and merits, not compared constantly to their predecessors.

BarryCooke,

@justinling A government has to be evaluated in terms of what would have happened had an alternative been chosen. Perfection is never an option on the table.

@BarryCooke I mean, you're perfectly entitled to that opinion. But, no, I don't think we can compare a real government against a hypothetical. I think makes journalism basically impossible.
