Apple’s failure to make a flagship iMac available to pro creatives pisses me off so much that I find myself considering buying a high end windows machine.

But then I think about what it’s like to work on Windows and I’m ashamed.

@dgar I like my custom built pc with Windows 11 pro.

@skyfire747 @dgar try a Linux live USB on it (I suggest linuxmint.com or mxlinux.org ): you will be surprised how well things work :-)

Q: How can you tell if someone runs Linux?

A: They’ll tell you.

@dgar I've been on macs and Linux since I switched from the Amiga in the mid 90s. The worst period for me was when I bought a dual G5 and it had a digital bleep every second or so on all the audio inputs including a very expensive 32 channel soundcard setup. I don't do much paid work these days so I'm sodiering on with an i7 iMac from 2017, which lets me run reason, logic, older Photoshop, fcp, etc. at the level i need.

@nicksalt My 2015 5K iMac is still chugging along, barely.

I've been in #bitwig on #Linux for years and it has been delightful. Well, almost. The VST space in Linux is pretty terrible. There are "shims" that get it to work, but that part isn't fun.

I've done windows too, when there's that plugin that I've just got to use. It's not terrible, but it does always feel like a step back from Linux.

Not done much Mac, but every time I try it feels like their UI treats me like a child.

@jhoward
The MacOS UI did feel patronising when I first switched. I’m used to it now.
I’ve never been able to gel with Linux. Not from lack of trying mind. 😊

Buy an older high-end mac instead, unless you have insane video crunching needs. But I've gotten pissed at the mac world with their macbook pros whose keyboards start failing after just two years, and since 2015 non-upgradeable memory and storage. I'm pretty sure my next laptop will be a framework computer running some flavor of linux. Never let vampires or windows 11 enter your home.

@artemesia non-upgradable components don’t bother me as much as the fact that they decided they couldn’t fit the M3 Pro or M3 Max into an iMac. It’s not like they had to squeeze a battery in with it!
(I can appreciate the performance improvements of having integrated RAM)
