And now you know why my parents (immigrants to the US who have been here since the 60's) started carrying their US Passports when traveling around the US around 2016.

@ai6yr @inquiline Also, most Americans do not understand that “the border” goes 100 miles inside the country as far as DHS/BP is concerned.

“Arresting officers must have probable cause, which could include witnessing the illegal entry or seeing it on video.”

This won’t be abused at all.

Nope 🙄

@ai6yr I started carrying my ID everywhere even during neighborhood walks after El Trompas was elected. I have no interest or desire to star in a Born in East LA remake. The wife and I used to joke that we traded a green card for a pair of working green eyes. We stopped telling the joke after he was elected since it no longer seemed funny.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah. I think people who aren't marginalized think "Well, all you gotta do is have your ID" and think it's no big deal if rights are violated in this way. They should care, but even if they don't, they don't realize how this is just a step to fucking with the rights of anyone hegemons dislike or want to target.

Look at the BS about saying Obama was born in Kenya. They'll just pick anyone they want and claim their papers are forged or whatever.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@glightly Yep, just look at how Black folks are pulled over willy nilly and held at gunpoint in this country, for no reason at all, mistaken identity, or just intimidation. Gives them legal cover.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr People are in such denial about this. The training is strong. Before these guys started doing shit like that even when they knew cameras were on them, I was trained like most white folks to think "Well, he must have done something to deserve it, something that happened before video started rolling."

I'm ashamed I fell for that training, but that training starts fucking early.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@glightly Yep, absolutely.

Things that will happen (already happen, but this makes worse), I predict.

  1. Cops get called by someone who says somebody "looks illegal" and bad stuff happens.

  2. People threaten/intimidate people who are Latino by threatening to "call the cops and report they are illegal" -- already something now, but far greater threat w/local police implementation vs. having to get CBP.

  3. Somebody who is a US citizen gets deported or held for a month or six months as an "illegal" by police, and particularly locked up in a rural TX county with gung-ho cops; if they are lucky someone gets them out, if not....

  4. US citizens who "look illegal" jailed/abused/beaten.

@ai6yr @glightly ICE deported a 17 year old US citizen under Trump. He even had a copy of his birth certificate, but the agents thought it was fake and failed to make any effort to verify it. Why would local cops, who have neither the access nor the time, be able to know who is and isn’t a citizen? 100% they will deport citizens — the only difference is sometimes you can actually successfully sue local governments.

Hyolobrika,

ICE deported a 17 year old US citizen under Trump. He even had a copy of his birth certificate, but the agents thought it was fake and failed to make any effort to verify it.

Do you have a source for that?

@Hyolobrika @glightly @mcnado

Here's one with an 18-year old US citizen, detained for nearly a month but not deported -- had an ID, social security card, and a wallet-size copy of his birth certificate with him.

"... Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents repeatedly target U.S. citizens for deportation by mistake, making wrongful arrests based on incomplete government records, bad data and lax investigations, according to a [Los Angeles] Times review of federal lawsuits, internal ICE documents and interviews." https://www.latimes.com/archives/story/2018-04-27/ice-held-an-american-man-in-custody-for-1273-days (from 2018)

Nearly 1,500 such mistakes btwn 2012 & 2018. No one has better info than ICE — federal agency. Local authorities can't do better.

@ai6yr that’s awful

carl,

@ai6yr This is standard in Germany. Everyone who does not look Aryan has to carry the passport along all the time. If you don't, you'll get arrested, in custody, until you can prove to be lawfully in Germany. This does not happen to whites, not even foreigners.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@carl Ouch... with their history, seems bad.

wotsac,
@wotsac@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I mean shit... I'm anglo as they come, have traced the one thread of my my heritage that I even glanced at back to the turn of the 1700s by way of the 7th Virginia Regiment.

If some good old boy cop gets a bug up his ass about it, it's going to (at best) be a very bad weekend for me

wotsac,
@wotsac@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr give the state the power to do this and it doesn't matter if you're carrying your documents - they'll be called forgeries or get "lost". You certainly won't have them or a dollar or your phone or a credit card in your possession when you get dumped on the street in an inhospitable place in a foreign country.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@wotsac Yep. Quite possibly.

You can trust law enforcement officers to visually judge your immigration status. 😵‍💫

@bibliofishy I know way too much about law enforcement culture, and too many police officers to make any kind of comment.
