The site that Kushner wants to develop was bombed by Americans in 1999. It was a military target, although with mixed civilian uses. The building (which #Trump’s SIL plans to destroy) commemorates Yugoslav Partisan victories over the Nazis in tense canyon battles during WW2.
This “deal” is a travesty for civilian victims of the 1999 war (Albanian and Serbian), in a country that wouldn’t exist without the #Antifascist struggle of the Partisans. 1/3
Serbia is donating the land for this building free, which it has done for other foreign investors too. This "innovation" in foreign investment is a project of our current autocratic president, Aleksandar Vučić.
During the 1999 Kosovo War and NATO bombing, Vučić was the minister of information. As the propaganda arm of Slobodan Milošević, he presided over the assassination of journalists and press censorship. 2/3
This is not the first time Vučić and Trump are cooperating. They did so during the Washington accords of 2020, which somehow also involved Israel, rejecting Hamas, moving the Serbian embassy to Jerusalem, banning Huawei, and giving a highway construction deal to Bechdel.
Yet, the first result of US-Vučić teamwork was in 1999 under Bill Clinton. Vučić purposefully ordered TV workers to remain in a building later bombed by NATO, leading to 16 dead journalists and another 16 injured.
