We are watching The Matrix. And oh... fellow children of the 90s... I was shocked to realise ... it’s absolutely shit? Like, hilariously shit. What were we thinking?! Surely we were all just too drunk on fingering that we didn’t notice how bad it was?
I was not a kid at the time, but I almost walked out of it. But I did enjoy it by the end. Thought it was overhyped, but I liked it. Couldn't stand the sequel though.

@thisismissem oh yeah you’re absolutely correct, and in it’s time it was groundbreaking. But... have you watched it now? It is so much less good than I remember it being. In a fun way.
@girlonthenet@thisismissem I reckon it's kind of to be expected for stuff that's properly original and ambitious — anything ambitious in 1999 is probably easy to do better 25 years later. And anything original in 1999 even more so — The Matrix was humanity's first real attempt at bullet time, whereas now even BBC Sherlock has it in for absolutely no fucking reason. Makes sense we've got better at it faster than we've got better at doing big explosions or whatever that we've been doing since cinema was invented. All the videogames people remember for their graphics look awful now too.
@andrewt@thisismissem oh yeah you’re 100% right, and absolutely no shade to it. I’m just saying, it is not as I remembered. I’m having a lovely time though and it was amazing at the time. But.
@andrewt@girlonthenet@thisismissem Graphics reminds me that Toy Story now looks way different than what I remember, at least I think I have a slight nostalgia filter so it's not so bad.
@girlonthenet saw it a few years back. It's a Good Sci Fi Romp. Suffers from being the first to do bullet time etc so what was exhilaratingly innovative now just looks pedestrian, and all the beats are solid and predictable. Were they new beats back then? Am I just better at seeing story structure now than I was back then? Probably. But also, I was extremely stoned, and remember that we were a culture still obsessed with The Fast Show.
