Math classes I wish existed:

The History and Theory of Mathematical Notation Use and Design

Mathematical Communication: Communicating Proofs and Data with Clarity to Varied Audiences

Fingers, Algorithms, Abacuses and Computers: Tools of Mathematical Calculation

What would you add to your dream course catalog?

@futurebird

For The History and Theory of Mathematical Notation Use and Design, you probably won't find more detail anywhere than the rather wonderful "Mathematics From the Birth of Numbers", ISBN 039304002X.

@futurebird Applied Maths For the Home.

Featuring how to figure out how many tiles you need for that wall.

How to convert recipes to 1 person, and back out to however many persons you're cooking for.

How to use geometry to design simple furniture.

How to scale price-per-weight to a single standard weight unit so you can compare disparate container sizes.

Myriad stuff like that. Math in daily life, and how it helps you live better.

@justafrog @futurebird People act like I’m some kind of wizard when I need to measure 1 1/2 cups and I use the 3/4 measuring cup.

OMG my husband is also mystified by this and I just don't understand why.

@futurebird @koushiniku Ask him which is the bigger burger.

A 1/4 pounder or a 1/3 pounder?

@justafrog @koushiniku

Not gonna. Might need a divorce if he gets it wrong.

@futurebird what galls me is that math is taught separated from science and engineering.

since i didn't learn most my stuff in school, but usually on my own before it appeard in class, i integrated everything on my own.

astronomy, auto repair, computers, history of science math... since middle school.

oh and geography. i once wanted to write a geography kinda book: "Grasping the World in Numbers"

too bad i'm so ill focused.

@futurebird funny, i think i taught myself all that stuff, my own study, i read a lot of books, during high school.

@futurebird Perhaps it exists, but practical uses for binary and other bases. Base ten is great, but it isn't always the best
