@flameeyes I found it interesting that you mention newsletters as replacement. You are probably right that they are, I just hadn't considered it that way.
Personally I find them a poor replacement since the format is so different - at least most newsletters I have seen a many different things crammed into one hard to navigate container, when blog posts are normally more contained to one thing... but I will entirely likely admit that I'm an outlier :-).
@simonlbn I've seen both kinds of newsletters, to be honest. The problem is when you actually monetize content, there's an expectation that content is produced on a schedule.
And you do end up having to fill it up if you have a weekly newsletter. I tried keeping a biweekly, then weekly, schedule for the blog, and it's incompatible with full time work, let alone full time work and a family.
Fortnightly is more flexible, but even now I'm still burning through backlog, because I've been too busy.
@flameeyes I don't miss Reader per se (I'm more than happy with a self-hosted tt-rss), but because its closure was a watershed not only in the internal Google culture, but also in the global mindset about a web a small realities.
@flameeyes I never used it, and I've always had this difficulty understanding the people who bemoaned its demise. "Like, you know there are other feed readers, right?" I was a big user of Opera in the 2000s with its RSS/Atom capabilities built into the email system; then when that died I switched to a browser extension (not as good but good enough).
