The Django apps I actually use (rough cut): https://micro.webology.dev/2024/02/04/the-django-apps.html

Huge disclaimer here. I'm writing something and publishing it daily in February while juggling some family things. Some days might be a list of things, and others might use Grammarly more on autopilot+apply all, but I suspect everything will even out over the month.

@webology I’m enjoying the series so far! 🎁

brian,

@carlton @webology Same here.

@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@brian @carlton Thank you both. That's nice to hear.

@webology Wowza, I applaud you writing at that frequency! 👏 Loving them so far :)

@davidfstr@mastodon.world avatar

@webology Thanks for listing the Django apps you find useful! If you have a few extra moments, just a one sentence summary of each app on the list would be helpful ✨

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@davidfstr Thanks for the feedback. That's more or less my plan and why I pushed a quicker rough cuts version.

tbaxter,
@tbaxter@mastodon.social avatar

@webology I’d love to hear why

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@tbaxter Will do. I'm trying to publish every day in February, but solo parenting + caring for my other half (surgery last Thursday) so compromises were made :) (everyone is fine, but it was a long four days)

tbaxter,
@tbaxter@mastodon.social avatar

@webology Every single day is a bold goal! I've been publishing a lot and don't have those sorts of commitments, but wouldn't even try for every day!

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@tbaxter That's why a few lists might make their way out vs. pieces I can spend some lunch cycles on.

I'm using the micro.blog to separate from my blog mentally. I'll probably port them all over eventually or maybe it'll shape what I want to turn my blog into.

@webology OK, that had some new (to me) and some surprising entries!

django-template-partials appears to be a competitor to sniplates I was unaware of.

Did not expect to see django-allauth on that list.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@FunkyBob yay, I'm glad there were some new ones there. I didn't quite have the time an energy to dig into them but I'm trying to write all month so I am hoping there is more time.

More often than not, I'm using django-allauth to get GitHub or some other outsourced auth to work. So it's a nice hammer for side projects.

I'll check out sniplates. I don't remember running across it before.

@webology @FunkyBob Interesting 🤔
I've been using https://github.com/python-social-auth/social-app-django for most of my projects, but I'll have to see how django-allauth compares. Thank you for the list. Always nice to be introduced to some other projects 😄

FunkyBob,
@FunkyBob@chaos.social avatar

@kfdm @webology That's the one I tend to recommend.

Over the years on IRC, I see a lot of people using allauth for misled reasons -- a surprising number just to get password reset!

Also there seem to be some design choices in it that make customising it difficult. At least, that's what I've garnered from helping people with it.

kfdm,
@kfdm@social.tsun.co avatar

@FunkyBob @webology I haven't had any particular issues with django-social-auth, though I know the maintainer has an open request (for a while) for more maintainers (though this is probably the same case for many projects)
https://github.com/python-social-auth/social-core/issues/539

FunkyBob,
@FunkyBob@chaos.social avatar

@kfdm @webology

Yeah, python-social-auth seems very well engineered, but has a steeper learning curve to get started.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@FunkyBob @kfdm python-social-auth is good, and I used it for a decade(ish). I remember having a few non-trivial upgrades and feeling underwhelmed by docs. I might be misremembering a settings change or some templates not quite being as easy to start new projects with.

I have flipped between python-social-auth and django-allauth over the years, but I found django-allauth easier to start with and customize for a few years.
