Black Basta ransomware gang breaks into Southern Water IT systems, threatens to dump shit everywhere

@cstross

Who do we have more confidence in managing Southern Water

hairyears,

@cstross

Sounds like a false-flag operation to me: the 'threatened' outcome is fully consistent with the existing management team's business strategy.

The logical step is to legitimise this by outsourcing the IT entirely to Basta: should be good for at least one special dividend and a round of bonuses for the directors.

@hairyears ... There's an SF horror-short here, with the horror being the reaction of the poor underpaid modern-slavery ransomware operators on being told they've inadvertently acquired the IT outsourcing contract for one of the most hated corporations in the UK: "you want money? Get out and earn it, then! By the way, pay no attention to the faeces everywhere ..."

@cstross @hairyears there is a funnier one of the ransomware crew deciding to take control of the system and IT and offer the government to run it instead of the corp. As they already control it anyway. But better.

@cstross Let's add a little sauce to that: outsourcing as a form of preferential reward to favoured shareholders and directors with an undisclosed financial interest in the parasitic outsourcing provider.

Or even a disclosed interest, in a sufficiently corrupt economy.

Couldn't possibly happen in the UK utilities sector, though: everyone's a paragon of rectitude and the outsourcing contracts are all written with watertight performance metrics and rigorously-applied penalty clauses.

.

@cstross

...So Black Basta will have to rebrand as 'Krapitek-Oligarkki Business Solutions', and bid for all the parasitic outsourcing contracts in open auctions.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@hairyears That IS indeed a ransomware operation's nightmare scenario!

Cadbury_Moose,

@cstross @hairyears You mean this hasn't already happened? (It would explain some of the recent events.)

kithrup,

@cstross If you'll pardon the expression: shit's getting real now, innit?

A_C_McGregor,

@cstross How are we supposed to tell the difference?

patrick_h_lauke,
@patrick_h_lauke@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross joke's on them, they've been dumping shit all by themselves anyway

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross honestly I half wonder if it'd be more effective to hack them to not dump shit everywhere, proving that it's possible at the low low cost of some dividends
