The most ironic thing about Chappelle these days is that while he revels in “punching down,” he comes off in interviews as being incredibly thin-skinned about any criticism of him. I don’t think that’s surprising or unusual for someone in his position, but it does bum me out as a former fan of his. Contrast that with Carlin (to whom people love to compare Chappelle). @hikeofthemenrys Carlin's whole massive final arc to his career - the part that elevates him to 🐐 status - happened bc he actually heard the critique and even mockery leveled at him in the mid 70s by Second City in particular - you have probably seen the documentary, I was very impressed by that. He was like: oh shit they're right. I've sold out, I'm coasting, I'm a caricature of myself. Time to do something about that. And he did.

Carlin’s comedy always came down, essentially, to observations on the human condition, with a strong sense of the absurdity of it all. And while he definitely made jokes that probably wouldn’t be considered politically correct these days, he also had an acknowledgment of that tension in his work. It’s hard to imagine that he would be as stuck in a rut as Chappelle seems these days.
@hikeofthemenrys it's sad, bc he was the best of his generation easily, but Dave these days can be summed up easily: he's an out of touch rich-guy asshole. That's all there is to it. Bringing Elon onstage and not knowing he'd get booed was the sign he'd totally lost his grip. All he has left is his timing and cadence and it sucks he's using them to just be a shithead
