So long, Slack, and thanks for all the fish. For years I've been in a low traffic Slack group with a few old friends. We used to live in the same city but now we're all over the place. Anyway, Slack's decision to hide the back-scroll unless we pay has worked as they planned and driven us freeloaders into the arms of a private IRC server, Ergo. It's open, pretty easy to deploy if you're also a linux weenie, and works with a variety of clients. https://github.com/ergochat/ergo/
@trevorflowers not disagreeing with your call here, but most of my similar groups are now set to deliberately forget messages after a couple of weeks and it is freeing. May be worth experimenting with, even in IRC?
@luis_in_brief I agree in general but this particular group of friends use chat as a way to work together on projects, including collecting links and notes. The backscroll is handy for that kind of thing. I'm not sure whether Ergo will let me set some channels as ephemeral and others as durable but I'll look into it.
