Getting an early on my New Year resolution to read more.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

Needing to recreate a few posts. 😂

January saw me getting ready for Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.

After Capote's Women, I read this one. I haven't read a novel in a while, and although it strayed from facts a bit, it was enjoyable.

The children's novel Tru and Nelle...wow. It is based on the real-life friendship of Truman Capote and Harper Lee. There were scenes reminiscent to Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. I thought this was the author's creation. As I listened to Deliberate Cruelty, I realized these pivotable points in Tru and Nelle really happened.

I knew about Lee's role in Capote's In Cold Blood. I did not realize how much Lee's friendship with Capote influenced To Kill a Mockingbird.

Listened to Deliberate Cruelty, which tells the story of Truman Capote and Ann Woodward.

Light on the Swans, but it provides interesting details about Capote's childhood not covered in Capote's Women. Also explains the night Ann shot her husband, Billy Woodward. Feud: Capote vs. The Swans strays from the facts - which are a bit muddled anyway.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

And Answered Prayers, Capote's unfinished novel at the heart of this season's Feud.

It was awful. In the prologue, Capote's editor says he thought the first chapter was nearly perfect. It definitely had a gritty sadness to it. Perfect? Not sure about that.

The other two chapters? Just awful.

Flyspeck,

@Hey_Beth I just began the series and am now curious about the novel-Truman is a mess!

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

@Flyspeck

The La Cote Basque chapter is as bad as Jack Dunphy tells him. And that conversation supposedly did happen. It wasn't Ryan Murphy playing loose with facts.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

@Flyspeck

I haven't watched this week's episode, but I loved the first two. I think Naomi Watts did a beautiful job capturing Babe Paley. And Tom Hollander - What a mess is right. He nails it.

Flyspeck,

@Hey_Beth the documentary footage style of the third ep was a great way to flesh out more of the swans' dynamics with Truman

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

@Flyspeck

Ooh! OK, I'm going to go watch it now.

Right after I recommend The Capote Tapes. A great documentary.

Flyspeck,

@Hey_Beth Thanks for the rec!

Watched this a couple of weekends ago, and in the list post, I noted that Estelle Winwood was the only actor I did not recognize.

I started reading Answered Prayers, and Winwood was a character in the book. She shows up.at a dinner party with Tallulah Bankhead and Dorothy Parker.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

This documentary, The Capote Tapes, was so good.

Truman Capote's story is really sad. The more I learn about his life, his works, and end...it's just really sad.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

With just a few exceptions, I don't reread books. This is one of them. Last read it in about 1986. And, too many decades later, I love it just as much as I did then.

I think I read everything Dominick Dunne wrote. In my recent Truman Capote kick - and I still need to watch this week's episode of Feud - I found the podcast Done & Dunne. I've so enjoyed revisiting somes of his biggest Vanity Fair articles.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

Now, unlike books, I rewatch TV shows all the time. This is my second favorite TV movie. I've seen it just a few times. 😂

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Capote wrote gritty stories. But where Unanswered Prayers was garbage, this one...I think I may have hated the story, but it was beautifully crafted.

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

Having just watched this week's episode of Feud, there is a real sadness in this dedication.

@Hey_Beth

Of interest. A complicated and troubled man, like Truman.

@DemocracySpot

Ah, thank you! I have no idea if Joe Mantello's portrayal of Dunphy is accurate, but this week's episode was so good.

@Hey_Beth young people today will have to invest heavily into watching the classics of the genre to get much out of that movie. Some things are already not so easy to decode for Gen-X.

tg9541,
@tg9541@mas.to avatar

@Hey_Beth ... I can see that you invest heavily in understanding Capote. Chapeau :-)

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

@tg9541

I'm watching Ryan Murphy's Feud. And I invest heavily in Ryan Murphy. Like my oldest is named after a Nip/Tuck character heavily. 😂

Hey_Beth,
@Hey_Beth@sfba.social avatar

@tg9541

I agree. I saw it as a kid, and a lot of it went over my head.

I did not watch the Nick and Nora movies until about 15 years ago. I did know Poirot and Miss Marple, however. My parents loved Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov. In fact, that why I knew who Nick and Nora were on this movie - as David Niven and Maggie Smith were both in Death on the Nile.

markvonwahlde,

@Hey_Beth Watch The Producers! You'll never forget her!

I will!

    @Hey_Beth it is! I’m convinced spell check is evil. Now with AI, it will take over the world
    I’m a big reader, Sinclair Lewis (Lenny Budd), Slaughterhouse Five, Etc.
    Picked up enjoyment of mystery’s with Leslie Waller, Parker (for relaxing read), Elizabeth George, etc.
    Been really trying to put down the electronics and read more for my own mental health…
    Like good music, it really difficult to hear about new books.
    Thank you for the recommendation. I will pick up a copy!

    Have you read MUSIC FOR CHAMELONS (1980)? Stories, fiction and non-fiction by Capote. Sorry for the Capotesplain, if I am.

    I went nowhere except the grocery store 2x/week and medical appts. for 2 years, and always N-95'd. No one came in, and I was the only one (of 3) who went out, mostly.

    I really should make time to start reading again.
