I think one of the big obstacles to finding communities I'd like is that for a lot of the things I'm passionate about, the communities are going to be like, 95% kids, and that's not an environment I want to be in.

It feels like there's a big lack of communities that are both sfw and adults-only (or where people at the very least act maturely).

I feel like it would be really helpful to have an adults-only sfw space place focused on cute mascot-aesthetic characters and associated media, but also on being creative with that stuff, and doing art, writing, character design and worldbuilding, instead of something like toy collecting.

I wanna see other peoples' cute characters and hear all about them, and I want to talk about Care Bears with someone who's not a teen.

But I don't know how many people would actually go for something like that, or how to find them. I've had a lot of attempts at putting together communities together before that never worked.

I think what some of my friends did was find communities for things they like back when they were teens, find friends there, and then miraculously have those actually last all the way to the present day, and that's obviously not something I can repeat haha.

I had a whole lot of problems socializing as a teen due to being autistic and not having any help, so all I could really do was learn through failing a lot. So that time kinda got wasted.

@NovaSquirrel I only have a single friend from back then.

Reflecting on this more, yeah it really does feel like a super important part of feeling socially fulfilled for me is being able to connect with other people through creativity, and ideally getting to feel part of a community built around that. Whether it's roleplay or art or games or whatever.

It feels like the biggest parts of my identity revolve around making stuff, and it's really important to me.

So if I had a place or a group based round making stuff that was focused around stuff I'm passionate about, that would be really helpful.

If there's interest I could try to put something together, but I worry that's the kind of thing that's too specific for people to want it.

roxy,

@NovaSquirrel nova the squirrel discord lets gooooooooooo

NovaSquirrel,
@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz avatar

@roxy Maybe I should actually

roxy,

@NovaSquirrel I honestly figured that's where this train of thought was headed, and honestly, there's a good chance it could lead to a community of retro devs (I tried attracting this community but it's hard when your games are 64bit)

bj,

@NovaSquirrel I think it would help this vision a lot to narrow it down to what parts of what you’re into you’d like to have a community around. Nobody’s going to share 100% of your (or anyone’s) interests, but finding the right subset of them to share with a wider community would be a path toward including those people who are interested in those too.

@bj Yeah that's why I thought it would be helpful to narrow it down to cute furry mascot aesthetic stuff specifically. Like these: https://twitter.com/Straitjacketzz/status/1610748192190070784

That feels like something that's general enough that there'd potentially be a lot of people out there, but specific enough that it's something I care a lot about.

But I don't know if that's too narrow or too general. I do feel like I know a lot of people who like that kind of character.

@NovaSquirrel yeah, definitely agree. My mobile gacha game of choice is Cookie Run. A while back I went to the official Cookie Run Discord, felt like I was the Oldest Human Being Alive, and left after a day of just browsing through it and maybe making one post. More power to their community, but I wish there was a place for adults to shoot the breeze about the dessert-based running game without feeling weird.

@NovaSquirrel definitely need more of this sort of thing around the place.

@NovaSquirrel I only know you from (S)NESdev, and that's overpopulated by dudes in their 40s, no?

NovaSquirrel,
@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz avatar

@JordiGH Yeah it's funny how NES dev also feels like it has a big age gap between me and most of the people but it's in the other direction.

That's a lot better, though definitely makes it hard to relate to people.

roxy,

@NovaSquirrel this is what I try to strive for in my chat
