I’m on record somewhere on Usenet saying that the WWW will never catch on. After using the Lynx Browser text-based WWW browser. When I was using CIX and its Usenet gateway.
Proper graphical browsing changed everything. Even if the original tranche of websites were overly garish. Including the first one I created for in-house use in the IT team where I worked. #WWW
@ianRobinson I was in the engineering performance team when my work was rolling out an intranet. It was amazing for getting data sent to the field managers, so much better than standing faxing multiple pages to them all.
But it was garish. They let us use random clipart for a clickable image for the stats, because we could highlight that day’s important ones in a more eye-catching way than a text version allowed.
It’s a million miles from that now, locked down to the very colour of font to use
