@arstechnica Probably has something to do with DRM being key to the Chromecast's ability to push ads and collect user data. The original is rootable IIRC, and the receiver API is locked down with baked in secret keys for DRM purposes. Pushing people to newer models ensures the only functional CCs are ones with no ability to circumvent hardcoded DNS and unblockable ads. This is timed well with the push for more ads as well as the blocking of original vanced app in the past week.
