There is always much talk of mental illness following these events, but of course every advanced country has people who are mentally ill, but they don't get mass shootings like the US does. So it must be something else, some way in which the US is not the same as other advanced countries.

Oh no! I remember this... It's this argument:
Americans are uniquely violent in the world and also it's fine if the most uniquely violent people have the most efficient killing tools.
It's two unconvincing arguments that don't improve when you combine them.
