Can any Networking Knowledgable types out there suggest why the old BT business hub routers I use for my little wifi network at work don't have usable wifi on my iPhone/iPad?

My MacBook is working just fine, but the other two just show "no internet connection".

It's not distance, the router is on my desk, 50cm away.

I think I've managed to fix this...

I put a cheap wifi extender on the network about a year ago. Turns out something had gone awry with the settings on that, so my phone was showing the router address of that one, not what it should have been. Disabled the extender, and BOOM, it's all working.

As an added bonus, it's caused me to faff about with the settings to get my Mac to actually connect to the wifi (previously it was just ethernet) and now Universal Control works (almost) perfectly.

This is an "obsolete" computer...

roknrol,

@DJDarren I've got an old classic mac running Linux/Kodi in my living room as a media center. Works beautifully.

pws,

@DJDarren On the mac, hold down the option key and click on the WiFi icon in the menu bar. This should show you which protocol and channel it's using (under Known Network). Post a screenshot as it might help identify what's going on. Next question will be what configuration options are available on the BT devices.

FreakyFwoof,

@DJDarren I've had weird issues with WiFI on iOS for some months now. I can connect to the network but have to wait about 5 minutes before things actually leave the network. Internal things do work IE: Homekit switches etc, but nothing outside. After a period, it just starts working with no rhyme or reason.

@FreakyFwoof I can't say I've noticed anything like that with the network at home; we use Deco mesh routers and they're pretty solid.

But the wifi at work is dreadful, so I've long used my own little setup to make sure I can connect. When I was sharing my Mac's ethernet over wifi I had no trouble, but AirDrop won't work which was a pain.

FreakyFwoof,

@DJDarren Airdrop should work even over ethernet, providing you do not turn off Wireless altogether.

@FreakyFwoof It doesn't if you're sharing your ethernet connection over wifi. Doing that effectively turns off the wifi by reversing it.

FreakyFwoof,

@DJDarren Aah, very interesting. Would it have worked with a USB ethernet adapter somehow? Just brainstorming. Likely you've tried all this stuff already so I should jus shut up lol

@FreakyFwoof Just forgotten the network and rejoined, and now it's working. For now.

It's really annoying.

And yeah, ethernet from the router is solid. The Mac mini never has any dropouts. But it happens with both the BT routers I have - wired connection is fine, wifi is flaky as shit.

@FreakyFwoof And brilliantly, this technique didn't work on my iPad... So I've got no idea what could be causing this...

FreakyFwoof,

@DJDarren Gotta love consistency.

I say "fine", I'm only getting about 30mbps, but I'm not using it to download anything hefty, so it's ok.

Well, it would be if my iPhone could talk to it...
