reneestephen,

The ferry--1km away from our house--is VERY ANGRY AT BOATS right now.

So much honking. And it's foggy, so also regular honking.

Mostly it's the water taxi, but so many people think the ferry is predictable and race in front of it. One time I saw it brake HARD, barely missing a powerboat whose captain was totally oblivious.

Sweet merciful Poseidon people, don't play chicken with a 1500tn boat maybe??

For non-sailors: one honk means "hey," five fast honks means: "get out of the way, asshole."

I know 1 or 2 honks are "I'm turning/passing to port/starboard" - except, rather importantly, I can never remember which is which lol.

I remember 5 as being rather politely termed something like "your intentions are unclear" - the restraint is almost palpable... everybody knows it really means "what the hell are you doing?!"

The Isle of Wight ferries in the Solent were famous for collecting yachts - the waters there are solid in boats and the ferries don't hang around.

reneestephen,

@jonjennings hahahaha "collecting yachts" is an absolutely delightful way of putting it

@reneestephen gross tonnage always wins

reneestephen,

@gnb YEP. My MIL's phrase comes to mind: whether the stone hits the jar or the jar hits the stone, it's going to be a bad day for the jar.

@reneestephen I think of C-3PO’s advice “I suggest a new strategy, R2: Let the Wookiee win” whenever I see an operator of a smaller vehicle think they can beat the operator of a much, much larger vehicle.

@sillygwailo lolol exactly. Every weekend sailor has heard the phrase "steam gives way to sail" and wants to assert their "right of way," but there is actually no such thing. There are COLREGs (Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972), and they specifically state that it's EVERYONE's responsibility to not be a dick, i.e.: do what they can in advance to avoid collisions.

Big boats = heavy and slow. Give way.
