I don’t use it, I heard it’s in testing phase and saw on Reddit that people are disappointed so for now I just use the webapp on Firefox. I dont really care about having the mail client on my desktop because I’ve always pretty much used webapps for email on desktop, even before I started my privacy jouneye and used to use Gmail and Outlook.
I just want a Linux drive so I can sync a few things between my phone and my desktop such as Keepass and Joplin, and also make file sharing easier
It’s seemed perfectly serviceable on the latest version of Mint. I’m not a real deep dive tester on everything but it notifies me when I’ve got mail and I can do the basics in the app. I don’t have any complaints but I’m no power user
Most software is built on free samples. Games, for example, very often have free demos...still..after decades. Free demos sold me on many games over the years. And one day, I'll pay for Proton too.
Recently converted from 1Password to Protons pass, and personally could not be happier. For me the email alias feature pass offers is super nice. And for me, the auto complete works somehow better on pass than it did on 1Password. I also think you get more for your moneys worth with Proton as their other services are very nice too 😊
I have somewhere on the order of 80 accounts on as many websites registered to Protonmail accounts, and I’ve never once had a website turn me away for the @protonmail.com domain. I exclusively use that domain. I can only remember one specific instance where they had downtime, too - overall they’ve been very reliable.
I did once have some of my protonmail accounts closed for suspicious activity, multiple years ago - but in their defense I was being pretty suspicious. I emailed support from my main account, explained the situation, and they unlocked the accounts for me - never had an issue since.
There definitely are sites that block or restrict accounts using ProtonMail addresses. Obviously social media sites will be more likely to force an account to provide a phone number if one is using a proton mail address compared to for instance, a GMail address. There has been one site I have seen block/restrict ProtonMail outright, and that is Lenovo. It is not possible to actually make purchases from Lenovo directly if the account's email is a ProtonMail address. Too be fair though, that is the only site I have seen any explicit account blocks/restrictions.
It seems I did not try making a Lenovo account with the pm.me alias address. I did use a protonmail.com address when tried before swapping to making an account using a Tutanota address and attempting to replay the purchase sequence. I don't remember the conversation I had with support when they deduced the error to protonmail addresses not being eligible for purchases for not "being verifiable" despite the fact that payment and billing information is also provided in a purchase. I don't remember if the support technician claimed that the pm.me alias would also be blocked, but for some reason I never tried it.
Fair enough - all I can say is that I’ve never personally encountered one of those sites, despite having signed up for things with Protonmail exclusively for over 5 years now.
Lemmy (and formerly reddit) aside, I don’t use social media - but even if I did, I’m not sure I’d notice the restrictions you mention without an unrestricted point of reference.
The Lenovo point is interesting - I don’t have a Lenovo account, but I do use Thinkpads, so I may need one eventually.
The official ProtonVPN app on Linux has a lot of problems, like a memory leak that exists since years now. At least for me, only the cli without graphical interface works (but does so very well after some tinkering). The lack of Linux support (especially no Linux app for the drive) has frustrated me to the point I am regularly questioning my Unlimited subscription. But I agree in general, you can get around a lot of the Linux limitations by using browser extensions like the ProtonVPN one. And overall the addition of new services and great security outweighs the lack of Linux support.
There is zero support for drive under Linux which is the major reason I haven’t migrated my workspace org yet. I’d like to ditch Google, but I automate backups with rclone to gdrive and that workflow can’t currently be replicated under proton
If you use an IMAP email client the ProtonMail Bridge works great on Linux. VPN works well from the command line, though the GUI is still pretty clunky and RAM heavy and either way they really need to make Wireguard and Stealth available on Linux already.
I’m interested too. I currently use Obsidian syncing to my home server, but I like the idea of using Standard Notes synching to Proton Drive. Although you can’t use Markdown with the free version of standard notes, so I’m hoping full featured Standard Notes will be included with Proton Unlimited
Simple login will appear as from the alias when you respond to an email received through that alias. It does not however (IIRC) change the sender field that the user sees from your default.
Sure, but we’re talking about being able to select a Sender from the ProtonMail UI. It would be awesome if PM could do that, and it’s a highly requested feature. That would basically be the same as having it integrated so that the PM UI could allow you to choose a reverse SL alias when sending instead of navigating to SL, creating it manually, then copying and pasting into the To field.
