How many people out there have changed from #scala to #elixir successfully?

The language seems interesting enough, being #FP helps, and there seems to be some interesting opportunities out there to work on it.

So, what's the experience changing from one ecosystem to the other, successful stories, failures, recommended reading or learning resources?

🙂

sjfloat,

@vascorsd By "opportunties", do you mean for employment?

sjfloat,

@vascorsd I've been intrigued with and the BEAM for years. But it seemed more niche that Scala

@sjfloat yes, for employment. I have a friend that showed me an interesting opening at his current company.

But I don't know how big of a jump it would be or even if the employer is interested in someone with mostly scala experience.

Here and there I've also seen some other opportunities and the domains to work at seem more interesting, since nowadays scala is mostly data processing stuff, cryptocurrencies or gambling 🥲

@sjfloat also I'm not sure about the range of salaries currently going on within elixir, when I know more or less what to expect in scala, so that would also be a concern 🤔

sjfloat,

@vascorsd Yeah. But it'd be tough leaving the types behind.

sjfloat,

@vascorsd I'd really like to play with #gleam.

@sjfloat gleam really seems interesting. As you say, it's really hard to leave the types behind when you are so used to it.

But in all this, the concepts of the erlang vm, the shared package manager between the languages and the concepts of concurrency and supervision trees, the lightweight processes and all that, are captivating and not so far from things we have to know and do also in scala.

It kinda helps that they focus on DX 🙂

sjfloat,

@vascorsd For years I've toyed with the idea of building a home automation hub around the BEAM. I also consider doing it in fs2.
