Are there any small drone users/pilots on here that could answer a question.
Are #drone that you can purchase for home use stable enough in a hover that if you mounted a #telescope / #camera with telescopic lens it could take a non blurred (from movement) #photo

Thinking i could get better photos of night sky above even the small amount of light pollution is near.

@LeeFromVT Not in that class of equipment. Most smaller drones use built-in cameras which are internally stabilized or have a built-in gimbal. To lift something as heavy as a digital camera with telescopic lens and provide some stability you would be looking at research- or film industry- grade equipment (US$ 10,000 to 20,000 minimum).

@LeeFromVT To escape light pollution, you’d need to get above the haze and cloud decks, assuming the platform is stable. That could be many thousands of feet and depending on the airspace you’re in, it may or may not be legal and/or a risk to aviation.

@f800gecko

its just a few neighbors security lights i am at about 3500 feet on low residential mountain.

doxial,

@LeeFromVT any drone capable of doing this will be over the 250g weight limit for unlicensed drones in the US

@doxial

Thanks. I know some have cameras on them but i want long distance details shots. See the mountains on the moon good, lol

Can any of the recreational ones carry any weight on them? To upgrade for a lenses or some similar smaller upgrade to an onboard camera?

doxial,

@LeeFromVT you can even buy mounting kits for most cameras but I would start by looking at how heavy your camera is.

Lenses + dslr usually weighs in around 2-3 lbs. Maybe more depending on optics and gymbals. For drones, you'll want to pick one that's rated for that size of payload. [There are so many different manufacturers now]

I've seen a phantom III carry stuff it wasn't made to at the cost of battery life. It didn't have the stability necessary, everything was blurry.
