Australian here, where we've always hand counted votes.

Let's remember if ballots had been hand counted in 2020, Al Gore would probably have been president.

Sorry for not being clearer, party scrutineers should be there, but shouldn't be out of the possession of a federal electoral commission [who also administered the electoral rolls].

Did I say I was Australian. ;)

PS Here voting is compulsory. Getting off the electoral rolls takes a Death Certificate or a Medical Certificate saying the voter is no longer compliant.
