I have previously expressed how much I am against the EEE argument, but considering that there is this linked post from someone who actually has experience with working at a company that does engage in EEE, I guess I should check my opinions about EEE at the door, shut up, and hear out the concerns from people.

@manlycoffee I've also seen a different take on this which is that Threads federating is creating shareholder value by dissuading anti-trust & break-up lawsuits in the EU & elsewhere (which would force Meta to split up to facebook, instagram, threads, and whatsapp.

@thisismissem

Yes, I have heard this same argument as well.

I guess there is a healthy balance between trusting, and caution.

I personally would federate with Threads myself, if I were to be a server admin.

Their thought process for how EEE works is correct, but it makes some assumptions about the situation:

"This is about meta intending to strip mine the Fediverse for new users and eyeballs"

Most of us already have Meta accounts in some way. We're not "new users" or "new eyeballs".

It assumes that the core Mastodon team is going to accept one way spec changes from FB.

It assumes that this change isn't driven by regulatory oversight or disgruntled creators... /1

@manlycoffee @thisismissem How do you justify the moral question though?

I can see how that's possible for "free speech extremists" (or whatever one would call them), but once instance admins block any fedi instance for moral reasons or a lack of moderation it would become hypocritical to give Threads special treatment in my eyes.

@Natanox @manlycoffee I feel like we've had this conversation before..?

But blocking due to moderation issues is a different ballpark to "it'll embrace extend extinguish us"

Like, I've already seen someone publicly post about pulling their funding from Mastodon gGmbH because Eugen is supportive of more users on the fediverse via Threads. I think it's gonna be folks like that that do the real extinguishing.

@thisismissem @manlycoffee Of course it's a different ballpark; sorry, should've made it clear my question was more about Rahman's last statement.

@Natanox @manlycoffee I think ultimately different people would make different choices for themselves and the people using their service (if any), and that's okay.
