Feakster,

@omgubuntu I feel that with every news/feature announcement Ubuntu becomes more and more dead to me.

wx1g,

@omgubuntu Is Ubuntu dropping APT?

gregor123,

@wx1g
It is always a good idea to read the whole text before writing anything about it.

fenndev,

@omgubuntu Immutable? Great. Snap? Eugh...

_Christ_OFF_,

@omgubuntu Snap t5he reason why I have chosen another distro

saluki,

@omgubuntu what does canonical have against flatpak? Are there any advantages to snap over flatpak or is it just a slightly more proprietary option?

airik,

@saluki @omgubuntu snap is canonical’s proprietary option. That’s it.

    @omgubuntu Let's see... flavors are not allowed to ship Flatpak, "but anyone can still install Flatpak from the Debian repos!" and now Ubuntu is moving to a Snap-based desktop.

    Will there be a snap of Flatpak, or will Ubuntu be opting out of a massive trove of apps distributed by their developers usable on all other Linux desktops? 🤔

    @omgubuntu This is very cool.. I'd like to know some details of the approach being used. Is it using transactional updates (like openSUSE), ostree images, AB deployments, something else..?

    @omgubuntu > a classic, deb-based version (default) and, for the first time, an immutable, snap-based build for enthusiasts to experiment with.

    This should be somewhere just under the title.

    catraxx,

    @omgubuntu Oh ffs. Well, i have to see how Neon react to this, but if this indeed becomes a trend, i am done with Ubuntu for good.

    Oh, snap!

    @omgubuntu if you read the article you can still get the deb based version.

    bradenhynes,

    @omgubuntu Will Kubuntu get an all-snap version as well?

  • bradenhynes,

    @peterkal @omgubuntu And then how would I install packages that currently can only be installed through APT? It won't be an option for me if I can't install Git, Pip, etc.

  • bradenhynes,

    @peterkal @omgubuntu Why do I get the feeling that won't happen? That would be thousands of snaps.

  • bradenhynes,

    @peterkal @omgubuntu True. Don't know how I missed that.

    anthonyhove,

    @omgubuntu Oh no.
    I hope that won't affect distros based on .

    brucehankins,

    @omgubuntu I'll be curious to see if this overrides the work I've done on a Kubuntu machine to rip out snap as it's updated.

    bano,

    @omgubuntu the worst decision ever made

    motang,

    @omgubuntu immutable distro is where we headed. For everyday users it's really the best. They do that already with their iPads, iPhones, Android phones, and Chromebooks already.

    omgubuntu,
    @omgubuntu@floss.social avatar

    @motang Absolutely. Snap was created for this, so this could actually be a golden opportunity for it to shine. It's exciting.

    GoatsLive,
    @GoatsLive@mastodon.social avatar

    @omgubuntu Not sure how I feel about that really.
