A haunting collection of roughly 10,000 recordings of nuclear weapons tests from the 1940's - 1960's.

"The films are equal parts terrifying and fascinating."

@stefan @Beautifulpublicdata US killed more Americans with nuclear tests in Nevada than citizens murdered in Japan. The nuclear particles spread east and you can easily find maps of where just some of the particles landed. The US gov stopped looking after we realized how bad it was paid out some people who got thyroid cancer but they only looked at two specific radioactive particles and we don't admit it but we specialized in dirty bombs so the estimated death count in the US is way under

@ekis @Beautifulpublicdata I haven't seen the new Oppenheimer movie, and it doesn't sound like it itself addressed this part of the history, but I'm glad that it at least seems to have opened the conversation in the public. Definitely learned a lot about this stuff over the past few months.

@stefan @Beautifulpublicdata I have zero desire to see it; I hate him.

Also something that is very easy to see looking at the data is we specialized in dirty bombs. Castle Bravo was the dirtiest bomb ever set off.

Where as the Tsar Bomb was cleaner and bigger; and they did it with 10th of the testing.

@stefan @Beautifulpublicdata Or the fact that we blew up so many of our own islands off the map testing building size thermonuclear weapons we had to borrow islands from Britain.

And the reward? Oh we made it smaller than a building, small enough to put on a warhead and launch on a ICBM.

That way we could put them on nuclear submarines which are capable of destroying the planet, going under water coming up and destroying the planet again, probably 14 times over.

@stefan @Beautifulpublicdata Oh for the sake of discussion, here is my favorite version of the map of how we fucked over our own country with hubris and stupidity.
