Rasta,

How do you capture your videos?
My camera records .MOV format, that must be converted to .MP4, often too big to share.

I don't get the same focus on videos, as my camera tries to refocus each time it moves.

I found (for me) what works best, is to shoot still photos and stitch them back into video. Takes awhile without a computer.

The moon is descending below the treeline. It moves top left to bottom right, against the tree branches

@Rasta
What kind of camera do you use?
The re-focusing can probably be fixed by going into manual or pro mode and selecting manual focus.
There are quite a few stop motion and time lapse apps out there that can do a video like this. If you choose wisely, you can probably find one that has a free version that is limited to 720p resolution. Ideal if you want small video size 😄

Rasta,

@MennoWolff I have a Kodak digital camera, it's not web connected. Manual focus is great on images, but movie has less focal adjustment. I have to convert to upload

@Rasta
Right. And that's the problem with standalone cameras. They can be really good at what they do, but adding or changing features is near impossible.
My Canon DSLR has a jack input that allows a remote shutter, which I've used for sky photography.
I've always wanted to build a little electronic tool that fires the shutter every x seconds or minutes.

Rasta,

@MennoWolff Actually, this camera is very basic. All my cameras were either hand-waving instant developing, or four settings, sun, cloud, mountain, face. This one has things I don't know. I know how to use ISO but no idea what it is, I learn as I go, specifically on this camera. But, learning the features, it has facial recognition. Pets and people, and will take a photo when it sees one. 48 optical zoom, and macro, but I'm wearing it out

Rasta,

@MennoWolff back in the days when they had webcams that look like a golf ball, they had software that allowed you to set time to take pictures. And I would set the camera in front of a flower and have it take photos all day and watch the flower move in the Sun. For the Android phone I have a lightning app, that takes fast photos that you can separate the flash later. Not quite the same but good

panicdragon,

@Rasta always love seeing the moon

Rasta,

@panicdragon it was setting so late, that I couldn't get the moon set this morning. The sun was too bright to see the moon at all as it dropped. Last chance tonight for a moonrise

panicdragon,

@Rasta ahh the past few days we have had grey skies here so couldn't see anything

Rasta,

@panicdragon one year we had a total eclipse of the moon on a cloudy night. Everybody gave up that we just wouldn't see it, and I put a milk carton in my driveway, some music on, pot of coffee and a tripod. And every time the cloud moved I snapped the photo or two. When it was done and daylight I had the full eclipse captured one shot at a time and put into a movie

panicdragon,

@Rasta that sounds an amazing night

Rasta,

@panicdragon I'm pretty determined. I get up 90 minutes before Sunrise so I can catch nautical twilight and the colors that it brings. On clear nights or full moons, I'm often up all night, switching windows for sunrise. Tons of Awesome photos . People tell me that even the dullest days are still amazing.

panicdragon,

@Rasta oh will keep an eye out for your pics. Don't think I could stay up all night like

Rasta,

@panicdragon I thrive on 4 hours of sleep, no matter when I take them. The trouble is I'll have to be up for at least 8 hours to try again. Often that's the middle of the day and there's too much work to do. I'm retired but I've always been like this.

panicdragon,

@Rasta let's just say with me coffee is my saviour lol

Rasta,

@panicdragon it was with me too, I get up a few hours before my wife and drink a pot of coffee and make a new one for her and drink half of that. In the last few weeks I've been out working with one cup of coffee, and this morning almost none.

  • Rasta,

    @MaJ1 each shot can drag, if you choose that. I prefer clean clip and move. I have more to create later.
    Having a bad air bubble day, I'm unable to have coffee yet

    glen_malley,

    @Rasta I use a crappy little app on android called "Video Compressor-Video to MP4" to squish things down to a postable size. Even then, at reduced resolution, anything over 10s is gonna be too big.
    The size limit is pretty small on mastodon since no instance has infinite storage.

    Rasta,

    @glen_malley it's hard here. My posts I created on other platforms, are too wide, too big, wrong format.. for here. Past creations have to be redone

    glen_malley,

    @Rasta
    Long as you stay under around 4MB videos should go up fine.

    Rasta,

    @glen_malley it used to be 2min on the X-birdsite

    glen_malley,

    @Rasta
    Yeah but the bird site has dedicated storage to hold infinite files, paid for by advertising. We have limits, paid for by donation.
