Making some good contacts on the 15 meter band right now. Again, amazing to me that I’m essentially using the power equivalent of a lightbulb, setting it on my balcony, and waiting for someone in Belize to see it and flick their lights on and off in reply. And it works. #hamradio #amateurradio #ft8

@ethanschoonover Do you work CW also, or just digital modes?

@panamared27401 Very cool. That’s actually my primary ham radio activity (emcomm) with a Seattle group ( https://seattleacs.org ). I’ve met some folks in the radio community from N.C. and they have some pretty intense emergency responses.

@badge18 I’m running FT8 off my 5W magloop and can’t believe the contacts I’ve made today from CN87!

    badge18,

@ethanschoonover Picked up Greece on 15M FT4 about an hour or so ago.

@badge18 !! Inspiring me to build an antenna!

    badge18,

@ethanschoonover Dipoles are easy and for 20/17/15/12/10 they can be pretty short. My Alpha Delta DX-EE is hanging on a wooden privacy fence at the moment. Fan dipoles are pretty easy to build if you don't want a commercial one.

@badge18 I have a lot of notes on possible commercial antenna purchases but I feel like I should definitely try and build my first HF antenna (after this magloop, which was a purchase; chameleon f-loop).

    badge18,

@ethanschoonover Fan dipole also called a parallel dipole. Pic can be found here: http://www.arrl.org/trap-dipoles-parallel-poles

    badge18,

@ethanschoonover While I am currently running a commercial fan dipole, I have built lots of wire antennas too. Worth buying a 1:1 balun to use as the center feedpoint.

    badge18,

@ethanschoonover Nice! Running 25w into a fan dipole 5' off the ground here. Shouldn't work well at that height but it does fine on 15M and 20M.
