Anyone here got a and want to convince me - one way or the other - whether to take the plunge?

I like reading on - but I crave a bigger screen. I don't handwrite if I can help it.
Perhaps there's a bigger read-only device I should consider?

@Edent Great for writing, don't buy just for reading. Also just get the tablet: std emr pen, mine's from Lamy, much nicer at £30. Ditto cover.

@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@tingenek thanks. Looks like it isn't right for my usecase.

scarpentier,

@Edent I really like me remarkable2. The distraction-free environment that this device provides me has been a godsend.

I thought about android-based eink readers but the lack of software polish and all around clunkiness of Android for that kind of use case left me uneasy.

Remarkable does less things, but boy how it feels great.

I've been using mine for 18 months multiple times pwe week and will gladly answer any questions you might have.

@Edent I've got a BOOX Note Air 2. Runs Android.

I thought I'd take notes on PDFs on it, but never really have. It's great to have for the bed for reading books with a bigger screen.

Every morning I also use it to read the news, etc.

@Edent I love mine. I like to scribble ‘boxes and arrows’ when I’m thinking things through. Apple pen & iPad has never worked for me. But the Remarkable 2 is just excellent. I can scribble really quickly. Rub things out it feels like writing on paper. Loads of different types of ‘ paper’ to use as well. Not cheap… but good. And if you run Calibre for yer ebooks it does that as well. Btw - I’m left handed.

denny,

@Edent Didn't Amazon bring out an XL kindle last year?

@Edent #remarkable2 for reading makes sense if you use the notebook features imho. Even then, I mostly reach out to my Boox Leaf2 and iPad for reading.

Kindle Scribe sounds like a better option for you.

@Edent I've used my reMarkable2 everyday for the past few years as a my daily calendar, as a way to review journal papers, (with some caveats) as a book reader, a game board, and as an infinite notebook to scribble in. it is not an iPad, so you need to have very different expectations for use. no email, no web, no interactive programs. just very readable text and low-latency pen action.

academic paper on an eink tablet next to coffee pot
book cover page on an eink tablet
railroad ink gameboard on an e-ink tablet

@th
Interesting. I already have a few offline eink devices which I love.
But I do need a side light. And I don't handwrite.
Looks like a gorgeous device - but not right for me.

th,
@th@v.st avatar

@Edent if illumination is a requirement and you don't want the pen, then it might not be the best for you. I'm doing more handwriting than I had expected and also have been using the reMarkable to try to improve my penmanship...

@th @Edent I love mine too, but I noticed that I have very seasonal use of it. I use it a lot in the summer because I like to read outside, with my iPod, and have none of the distractions that connected devices bring. It's very light, so I like to carry it around when travelling, instead of a heavier device or paper.

Regarding handwriting, it now has a keyboard folio if you like undistracted “typewriter-like" writing.

    @xabean @fj @th
    Thanks. I need something I can read in bed, so a lit eInk is a must for me.
    And yikes to people sticking health stuff on it!

    walterebert,

    @Edent My biggest issue with the device is that the USB connection doesn't show up as a drive. You have to start a webserver on the device and upload files in a web browser (or use their cloud paid service).

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @walterebert weird!

    walterebert,

    @Edent yes, even an Amazon Kindle can do that.

    theothornhill,

    @Edent I use mine extensively. I like to scribble on the margins of stuff I read. I don't use highlighter or other pen types, and I suck at drawing. However, I pull it out all the time to draw some squares and arrows.

    For articles I really enjoy it. I like that there's no backlight, but I'd love to force higher contrast for articles with bad print. It can be a little hard to read, even in well lit situations in those cases. I don't like that they are implementing 100 new features that most people probably like, but I'll never learn.

    It's probably expensive, but it's been a while since I bought it, and it's still in use, unlike some other things I own.

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @theothornhill interesting, ta.
    I use https://koreader.rocks - that allows for contrast changes.

    theothornhill,

    @Edent cool! Does that work for remarkable 2?

    denny,

    @Edent I worked with a guy who bought one of the early ones, he seemed very happy with it.

    @Edent I really enjoy mine for annotating documents / having a totally distraction free environment. Just like paper, though, you can't use it in the dark without a light. SSH access is cool for hacking. It's expensive, but for my work flow (annotating PhD students' work) it's in my "indispensable" list.

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @mpe
    Ah, didn't realise it wasn't lit. That's why I like my Boyue for reading books.

    @hughrawlinson @Edent I have a remarkable 1 so disclaimer but: if you’re after something that is very specifically an infinite stack of paper to scribble on, it’s great. Don’t buy it if you want anything else

    Edent,
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    @joenash
    @hughrawlinson

    Noted. I want something A4 for stupid PDFs which don't reflow.

    m_i_c_h_a_r,

    @Edent how about a Kobo Elipsa?
    I’ve got a Kobo Aura H2O, I would buy the Elipsa if I needed a bigger screen.

    rleyton,

    @Edent currently evaluating one. I love writing by hand (really helps
    my thinking process), and enjoying ability to write without limit (and ink smudges). But haven’t quite got the filing system sorted.

    It’s got ssh access which is quite nice, and there’s a useful community of extensions and tweaks. OCR is quite good (even with my scrawl), but wish it did it by default so could search.

    davidbragg,

    @Edent I really like my remarkable for writing. As a reader, wildly over priced. There are almost certainly several better options.
