Canada’s #logging industry devours forests crucial to fighting #ClimateChange

"While nearly 56 million acres of well-established trees at least a century old remain in the region, logging has shattered this forest, leaving behind a patchwork of isolated stands of trees that has created a landscape less able to support wildlife, according to the study. And it has made the land more susceptible to #wildfire, scientists say."

@CelloMomOnCars And at a time when 2023 delivered record breaking wildfires in Canada of which by October had burned 45.70 million acres of forest. This is ~5% of all the total trees in Canada burned in ONE year.

This is what the outer burn perimeters of 6,500 unique fires raving a country looks like.

We need all the trees we can get. Doing anything with non-renewable lumber at this point is a crime against the planet.

@Infoseepage

Wow.
I knew it was a lot, but 5% is immense.

@CelloMomOnCars I remember hearing "the area which has burned is about the size of North Dakota." That was back in June I think. It just kept going.

@CelloMomOnCars 45.7 million acres is about 71,400 square miles. The state of Washington where I currently live is 71,298.

It's as if my entire state burned tot he ground.

Christo,

@CelloMomOnCars
That's a crime

@Christo

Humans really need to stop messing with the life support system we don't understand.

If ordinary people like you and me didn't buy lumber, this wouldn't be happening
??

@failedLyndonLaRouchite

Correct.
Therefore,
Let us fight to get rid of single family zoning. One McMansion is large enough to house 2 - 4 families and would enrich community life.

I live near West Newton MA, where you see 4,000, 5,000, or even 6,000 foot houses where two people live

unreal

I know the kind you mean.
Developers are driven to build large by the financial math:

You buy a lot with an old house on it, you take down the house and build a new one. The new one HAS to be large for your to make a profit.

I suspect builders would be happy to build multifamily homes if there were allowed, but the single-family zoning keeps them from doing that.

The question to ask: WHY single family zoning, anyway?
