Re my last boost, looks like HID support for Braille displays via bluetooth is coming in Android 15. This should let devices like the Brailliant BI 20X, 40X, The Mantis, and the Humanware NLS EReaders connect to devices running Android 15 via bluetooth. Fantastic news.
Clarification: These devices can be connected to Android devices via USB cables right now. The new support is for HID over bluetooth, enabling us to use our displays wirelessly.
@ppatel About time. This has taken much longer than it ever should have. Also, I hope to see some fixes to support for the Mantis Q40. The bugs which showed up while using that display with TalkBack were bad enough that I gave up on Android altogether because I literally couldn't get what I needed done on my phone anymore.
@NoahCarver It's still going to take some time. Well I suppose it depends on your phone. If you're running Samsung or another manufacturer's device which takes some time to get Android 15, You may have a year or more before you get access to HID support.
@zersiax I forgot to include it in my list. But it should work. Unfortunately, I can't install the beta on my Samsung device. Totally sad because I've been wanting to use Braille on Android regularly, not just when I feel like connecting my USB cable to it.
@ppatel@zersiax Now are you running google talkback? I keep hearing from people that Samsung is missing braille support entirely from their android fork without switching to the google accessibility suite. Would love to be 100% on this, but I have gotten it from several people and would believe them.
@ppatel@zersiax Yeah that was my point, I have devices running all the google services and builds,, not forked ones so knowing what will or will not work is reliant on word of mouth.
@dhamlinmusic@zersiax Oh believe me, I completely understand. Samsung refusing to have the latest Talkback in their store is a travesty and it's frustrating for all involved. Not many manufacturers customize like Samsung does though.
@ppatel@zersiax Huh odd, the people I know are on at least an S23 and an A54, thought one was on an S24, but I know they had to install AAS because they could not use their display otherwise on the android 13 OneUI with samsung TB 13.5.
@dhamlinmusic@zersiax The S23 Plus I'm running has Android 14 now. It has Braille Display support. It could be that they were running an earlier version of Android 13 on their devices, which didn't have Braille display support.
