"AI" continues to dominate word-of-the-year choices.

Dictionary.com just chose "hallucinate," and The Economist recently chose "ChatGPT."

@grammargirl

Maybe I'm dumb, but I never understood why we do 'word of the year'-thingies.

They're not new words, AI is from 1956. They're typicallt not really interesting words either, in a linguistic sense.

@EvilCartyen I guess it's a lot like New Year's resolutions. They're stupid in the sense that you can change your life anytime, but they play into people's tendency to put a lot of weight on the turning of the year. Words of the year are a way to reflect on the zeitgeist.

@grammargirl No mention of the word #enshittification which is a travesty.

@joeo10 Yes, I expected "enshittification" to make it onto some lists too. I haven't looked yet deep down into the runner-up words. (But it may also just be a sign that we live in an online bubble.)

@grammargirl meanwhile in Australia: word of the year is "cozzie livs" ( our abbreviation for cost of living) which caused some upset!

@caity I LOVE the Australian tendency to make absolutely everything sound cute and fun.
