there is something utterly adorkable about H.G Wells' book 'Little Wars' (1913), especially considering the amazing reproductions of photographs featuring the author and his quite notable friends playing a serious game with toy soldiers... while dressed in what then was most likely considered leisure wear.

he even had himself featured in a painting in the illustrated London News, which I think was supposed to be an advertisement for the manufacturer of the toy soldiers

@kyonshi ooh I have an Illustrated London News! Which edition is this?

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Troggie I actually don't know, this is a reproduction of the painting from a later book on wargaming

@kyonshi People shouldn't be allowed at a TTRPG unless they're wearing a tie, and it better be a full windsor knot.

#standards

@Printdevil I will keep wearing a single windsor knot, thankyouverymuch.

for I am a tabletop MAVERICK

@kyonshi I bemoan the lack of cravats amongst young GMs

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Printdevil clearly we need a #ttrpg dresscode

@stumblewyk@jawns.club avatar

@kyonshi @Printdevil If that dress code includes boater hats, I. am. IN.

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@stumblewyk @kyonshi It occurs to me we haven't addressed the bow-tie issue.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Printdevil @stumblewyk only during weddings and when cosplaying Doctor Who

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi @stumblewyk When aren't we cosplaying Doctor Who?

Yora,
@Yora@dice.camp avatar

@Printdevil @kyonshi You heard it, ladies. This goes for all of you too!

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@Yora @Printdevil that's... such a good idea actually.

Printdevil,
@Printdevil@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi @Yora Look I didn't learn to tie a bow tie in the 90s for one dance. Some of this knowledge has to be portable...

@kyonshi Dude gained points for admitting that his game might appeal to some girls, and was for them as well, but then lost all of them for using that to put down all others by proxy.

kyonshi,
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

@NinjaDebugger the old problem reading stuff from progressives of previous centuries. yeah sure they were visionary, but they also could be pretty horrid in other ways

(there's some thought that Wells was mostly writing these articles/books as good PR for himself, it seems his sex life was in the public spotlight at the time. sooo articles that presented him as an ideal father and all around swell guy who even lets girls play with him. if they are smart)

smito,

@kyonshi this is fantastic.
