cero,

Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, and Signal LLC may be interoperable in the near future.

Facebook was forced by the EU DMA to open up, and is complying without issue. Facebook/Meta will interoperate with services that use the signal protocol. (maybe Google Messages too!)

This is incredible!

It may soon be possible to use a signal client to contact people on WhatsApp and Facebook.

Meta implementing interoperability on the signal protocol could cause signal to become the standard universal messaging protocol.

(Signal Protocol is ≠ not Signal LLC)

@cero DMA forces big tech to make their services interoperable. It doesn’t say anything about who must interoperate with them. Yes, Meta’s gonna have to demonstrate interoperability of their services moving forward but nothing’s forcing Signal to be compatible with Whatsapp. As a matter of fact, Signal already said that they will only consider services that meet the same, one of the highest, bar of privacy and security guarantees. Whatsapp clearly doesn’t make the cut.
