FYI (and I need to look into this further) - there's a group working to make a new, open source replacement for Nintendo's online services for the 3DS and Wii U https://pretendo.network/
@majorlinux Remember that they already shutdown the eShop for both of these systems, so it's already near impossible to legitimately get a lot of games for these systems. At least the Pretendo network is making strides for the Wii U online stuff.
Also, hack your 3DS and Wii U if you haven't, it's easy and unlocks a bunch of cool stuff you can do with them.
@majorlinux It's so frustrating. Like I get servers can't be forever, but surely there's a means of preserving the ability to play these games and they stay trying not to do that because... I don't even know.
@majorlinux@BlackAzizAnansi It is primarily Nintendo working against all kinds of preservation … which is awesome! Because I don’t feel compelled to give them any money after a few years 🏴☠️
@majorlinux The problem isn’t that these services shut down (as all online services inevitably do) but that there’s no plan for preservation or local availability for games post-mortem.
@majorlinux Can't sell a remaster if the original still works. Can't sell a new game if you're still playing an old one.
I hate this mindset so much.
I've been doing a bunch of work with preserving early film and television over the last ~half decade, and it's dire, but it's nothing compared to what faces us in the video game space.
@ajroach42@majorlinux the thing that fries me (about the companies, not your comment) is that this isn't even true - Skyrim sells amazingly on new consoles even though the old versions still run. There are ways to make money and support old titles, but they don't want to and this gives them cover
