Hey friends, does anyone know what either of these objects are?
(They were found in a deceased relative's jewelry box.)
Please boost for added eyes, thanks! 😊

The lettering on the object on the left says:
Hadley Made in USA
Both ends open up to 90⁰ and the main body expands and contracts about a centimetre.

A clever person has said that the object in the right is a Writescope telescoping mechanical pencil. Thanks!

@KarenDorman @sewing Without knowing the exact size, I'm going with money clip on the one. Fold your bills in half and flip the top and bottom down to hold the bills. And on the front there is the pocket clip.

On the left, a pocket sized punch or stitcher, I would think. Its use would be in workshops, possibly to hand correct stitching, for materials like light leather? Or could it be an imprint, at the base? For embossing a company mark on something, after inspection? But the basic action seems obvious.

@skydog I wonder. Are they connected to Hadley company from Toledo, founded in 1945?@KarenDorman @sewing

Well, all I see on a company history site is that they merged with a larger diversified company that might have made something like this, small batch. But it's definitely outside of Hadley's core business.

@skydog Some companies back then, did make novelty items as give-aways to business customer reps. Looks like they made a lot of things with brass. @KarenDorman @sewing

I may have hit on it. This company is exactly the type of use I expected. They make watch bands.

What does the lettering on the clip in the first picture say?

@KarenDorman The non tie clip is a collapsible pen that appears to be missing its cartridge. Neat find!

The second may be a leather punch, used to make belts or other openings in garments (shoelace holes, corset laces etc).

@mckra1g @KarenDorman @sewing Yes, an awl. I found one among my father’s tools.

@KarenDorman @sewing the one on the left looks like some sort of drafting tool. What does the lettering say?

@KarenDorman @sewing I think it's some sort of dress accessory; the clip looks like it clips on to a pocket. You might try asking at a fancy menswear shop.

Does the item on the left actuate? It looks like part of a sewing machine, maybe some sort of a hand held one?

KarenDorman,
@KarenDorman@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@sfwrtr
Hhmmm. I'll ask. The bottom does look kind of like a sewing machine foot doesn't it?

sfwrtr,
@sfwrtr@eldritch.cafe avatar

@KarenDorman And the top looks like two "levers" that might be moved in opposition by grabbing each in a finger pinch to move a needle up and down. Not saying I know; it just resembles that.

That looks a lot like a pocket compass to me.

That's what I thought! Several other ideas coming in as well and they also make sense.
