The real issue here is that this has been a strategy of the DNC for years. As much as they'd like to deny it, they are responsible for the rise of Trump and extremism. But we'll be asked to pretend that didn't happen, again.

When you endorse racist fascists to win, you're no better than those wh osupport them.

Diotima,

And Democrats are "merely" authoritarians who 1) have colluded with fascists for decades to secure a duopolistic stranglehold on power, 2) have endorsed many of the same positions, historically, 3) place power above all else, including risking lives by boosting the cred of a literally insane psychopath fascist so they could win in 2016, 4) share many of those fascists views on privacy, personal security, freedom of expression.

Democrats only look good when compared to fascists. Is that really the best we can do?

Constantly having issues

You're going to see a lot of issues on Linux boards because people go to then for help. I've been running Linux since 2020 and though there have been hiccups, its been remarkably reliable. Having said that, when there ARE issues, it can take some digging to find answers.

Is it not stable

Moreso than Win 11, in my experience. I use Win 11 at work and I've needed a system wipe twice. Once because networking just... stopped... and once because appx apps decided not to load.

Ongoing issues

Plugging PopOS as a good "set and forget" distro that is easy to grasp. The workflow is very MacOS and the tweaks they've made make for a friendlier interface v Ubuntu, IMO.

Vouching for PopOS, which has been my primary OS for years. The only thing I run a Win VM for is the old Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas & Campaign Cartographer. I suppose I could tinker with Wine, but it tends to be finicky with the latter.

Diotima,

I was a system admin with a focus on Windows for many years. The idea that Linix is somehow more issue prone hasn't been true for years, especially for end users who aren't tinkering. I've had more issues with an enterprise install of Win 11 this year than I've had with PopOS for the past 3.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Or maybe people have different experiences?

I use PopOS for work. It has been many times less error prone than Windows. I introduced my partner to it. They're tech aware but not an admin and they love it.

Israel is not a protectorate of the US but an independent and democratic country whose citizens are the ones who choose the government

Okay cool, can we stop supplying weapons and Intel now?

It tells us a lot that you'd rather a people suffer under a regime where women are little more than slaves versus a flawed but functional democracy. I suppose I should not expect anything less. L

Why is defederation an option when Limit/Mute exist?

In short i just jumped into the whole Mastodon blocking drama and am somewhat disappointed to see it as childish as reddit’s power mod drama. Accelerated by the fact that a Limit/Mute option exist just fine, i wonder why Block/Defederation is an option at all. It only moves power from the user to admins without anything in...

i wonder why Block/Defederation is an option at all.

There are plenty of reasons, but ultimately the idea is that instance owners choose who to associate with and users (if they allow them; some instances are private) can choose whether to be on the instance.

Federation is open in the sense that anyone can create an instance and connect. The intent was never to force everyone into the same pool.

"Admins" are only local admins. Their scope is a far cry from Reddit or Meta admins.

Is this the same system they use to slow down basically everything at AMS? Like seriously, that's the worst, dirtiest major international airport I've ever had the misfortune of having to use.

Calling people "Anglos" as if their race somehow defines their worldview is racist. Expressing concern because an application with alleged ties to an authoritarian regime is sending data to an endpoint within said regime's borders might be silly, but it has nothinvg to do with race. With respect, that right there is some Israel "pointing out our human rights atrocities is antisemitic" level of bullshit.

World systems theory woukd suggest that the inner core should have shifted in the 21st century to include at thd very least China. Western powers may have been dominant in the mid to late 20th century but that is decidedly no longer the case; China fits every metric offered by the theory.

I doubt OP meant that anyway, given that their statements were directed at individual actors and not national powers.

Regardless, expressing concern because an app that both has ties to an authoritarian regime AND is effectively banned in that regime is understandable. Screaming RACIST at anyone who dares criticize China and calling them Anglos is both ridiculous and racist itself.

I chose federated networks, not Lemmy per se. Right now I use:

  • Firefish (Mastodon with a better kit)
  • Kbin (Developing Lemmy alternative w/o problematic devs)
  • Pixelfed (Instagram alternative, good except export tools lacking)

Federated is awesome because its more open and encourages choice, and I actually feel like there are friends to be made.

Probably the most relevant line in the entire article:

a series of polls have suggested Biden will narrowly beat Trump in the November vote. But with eight months to go, and the polls so tight, this could change and a number of polls have also indicated that Trump will win the election.

Whether Biden wins or loses is going to come down to how well he engages people in key states. Outside of the "blue no matter who" crowd, people have decidedly mixed feelings about voting for a candidate whose strongest argument is that he isn't Trump. Everything from events in the weeks leading up to the election to the weather (which affects Dems more than Reps) will matter, so rather than leaning on polls that suggest a victory... it might be wise to end those behaviors and policies that have human rights advocates concerned.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

It's interesting how wilfully ignorant people get when the data doesn't support their candidate. I should be angry, but at this point it's become so comical that I have to laugh.

Diotima,

Objectively, he has been a mediocre president whose most impressive victories have stemmed from the fact that the economy was already recovering from a worldwide pandemic. His handling of the withdrawl from Afghanistan was an appalling travesty that got countless innocents killed, his two-faced positions on Gaza (lamenting the human rights abuses while cutting aid and supplying weapons,) the fact that the interest rate for home loans has skyrocketed in an already difficult to afford housing market, and quite honestly, his racist and homophobic past make him difficult to swallow.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

So ethnic cleansing and support thereof is now reduced to "a policy?" That's a big oof.

Biden mishandled COVID, has slowly re-enacted some of Trump's worst policies on immigration, abandoned those who, at no small risk to themselves, supported us in Afghan, has presided over a massive increase in the cost of housing... and I guess, on the bright side, forgave a fraction of a percent of the student loans he said he'd forgive.

Maybe it's time to support someone who doesn't have the blood of countless innocents on his hands.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

If it were up to me, I would see the Republican party dismantled. Were I a member, I would vote for it's dissolution. But thing is, they can nominate whoever they like, including a fascist psychopath. That he's second most likely to win is a direct result of GOP and DNC collusion.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Reducing a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing to an "international policy" is gross.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Or you know, vote for someone who wouldn't support it in the first place...which you could do if the DNC didn't collude with fascists to keep alternative voices silenced.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Part of it is either Reddit manipulating search positioning or Google (most people's default search) prioritizing Reddit results. Searching for answers to questions often results in a half page of Reddit links. They may not be relevant, but that doesn't become apparent until you're there.

Diotima,
Diotima avatar

Incels using a word offensively does not make the word inherently offensive, and by letting them reframe the word in their favor you're giving them power they do not deserve.

When using male/female to denote biological sex, the words should not be offensive. "Were you born malr or female" in a medical settting can be vital to treatments, for example.

Generally, though, people ought to be using gender.

I've played and DMed all but 4E, and 5E is easily the most accessible version I've played. I agree, though; 5E with some tweaks works very well as a video game. 3.5E, as much as I love it, can get incredibly complex very quickly. AD&D is, putting it kindly, a shitshow. The system is needlessly complex and convoluted.
