My experience with #mobian so far on the #Librem5 compared to #PureOS Byzantium:

  • Most applications run much faster
  • The repository is obviously much more up to date
  • The modem wakes up much slower for incoming phone calls while in suspend. Some of the phone calls were not shown in the UI at all.
  • The micro SD Card reader has similar issues with suspend as with PureOS. Sometimes after supend the card can not be read anymore.

But right now I really love @mobian it is impressively snappy ❤️

@mobian @nivea
If I understand this correctly, this should not affect me. I was using the weekly build which is based on Debian trixie. I can't find which kernel it is exactly uname just says 6.6-librem5

Ok seems like I just fucked up (my fault) Pure OS on my which was pre installed on the phone. So I will install a fresh distribution. What is your opinion: Should I use again because it (maybe) works best or should I try ? Has anyone tested them recently?

tomasoqvist,

@zwarf I ran Mobian on L5 as my daily driver for a while, and generally it worked well. When the modem crashed, I think it always showed by that the indicator icon was gone. Toggling the hardware kill switch usually fixed it.

I am a bit of a phone and distro hopper though, so starting this past Saturday I am using postmarketOS edge with Gnome-mobile on a OnePlus 6 that I have as a daily driver. It has its quirks, but I will continue using it for a while and see how it goes 🙂.

@tomasoqvist Sounds awesome thanks a lot! Then I will try mobian next :)

I just noticed that I am using the #Purism #Librem5 now for 7 months now as my main device and since 6 months I don't carry a backup device with me anymore even for business trips I only used the Librem 5.

@tseitr If I just want to look something up I use Gnome Maps. For navigation the only app I know which really works is Pure Maps.
However, GPS on the Librem 5 is still not fast and super accurate so I find it hard to really use it as a navigation system in the car.

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@leimon Yes, absolutely. Using the Librem 5 is still a lot of work and not trivial at all. My biggest issue is that it loses the mobile data connection way to often. For example during train rides or after waking up from suspend. But as you already said, I also don't plan to go back.

We have a PC at work running #Linux which controls an important detector and I was wondering if anyone ever made an update so I quickly checked.
The Linux Kernel is 2.6.18.

rwbaskette,

@zwarf If you ever attempt to upgrade it, you probably won’t have to mind the kernel as much as the GLIBC versions. The kernel prioritizes binary compatibility.

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@rwbaskette I think won't update this thing anymore 😅 I will replace it completely 😅
But maybe I try just for fun 😀

#PicPlanner Version 0.5.0 is out now on #Flathub.

The experience on the #Librem5 or in general on touch devices should be much better now.

What is new:

  • Using #GNOME runtime 45
  • The UI is much cleaner
  • French language support is added
  • The app should be recognized as mobile friendly
  • A lot of bug fixes and improvements

Big thanks to @devrtz for a lot of code improvements and to @ireneethirion for the French translation

Me: I have already too many hobbies and I have a lot of work to do.
Also me: Started to play around with #Godot just to see how a game engine works and now I have a 3D FPS controller which can run, jump, sprint, crouch and has a climbing system integrated and I already started to animate a character in #Blender and set up a small game world where I right now test some water shaders...
Why am I like this... I will never be able to finish this project.

@zwarf I used to beat myself up about unfinished projects, but then I started to think about them like artists' sketches. Not every sketch is destined for the gallery wall, but that doesn't mean they're a waste of time.

#Librem5: Did anybody manage to move the home directory to the micro sd card and mount it to /home? Since I did this my sd card sometimes switches from read-write to read-only. I have to reboot my phone now multiple times a day because I don't get what is going on...

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@linmob Thanks, yes normally suspend is on. I am right now trying how it behaves without suspend. But it is an annoying error because it happen only occasionally and so far I can't reproduce it on purpose.

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@linmob Just to conclude: It is definitely suspend which causes the issue and the bug report which I have missed is

Does anyone know why the #Purism forums and the update servers are down? They are already down for over 24 hours which seems like they have a serious problem.

jcgonra21,

@zwarf I'm wondering about that too. Their repos are also down. According to someone in reddit the store is also down, despite being able to browse the website. I've tried all the socials that I know of and no announcements from Purism 🤔

@jcgonra21 Some others here wrote that a DDoS attack is going on.

I posted recently that I was at a conference in Italy. I only had my #Librem5 with me and the JPGs from the camera are good for documentation purposes. Today I looked at the RAWs. I wasn't expecting anything especially because I am normally used to the RAWs of my #Canon EOS R5 😅 But I have to say that I am quite happy with what one can make from the RAWs. Here are some of my fist edited images processed with #darktable. I think there is even more potential but I haven't had that much time.

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@waimus I have no PinePhone so I can't compare thbem but at least the Librem 5 has no issues with a color tint.
Most of the time the white balance is perfectly fine. All images here are with auto white balance. Everything is of course not on the same level as an current android or ios device, the focus is much slower, the auto exposure fails if you shoot towards the sun and so on. But I would say it is definitively usable if you have the time to adjust a slider sometimes.

silmathoron,
@silmathoron@floss.social avatar

@zwarf @waimus which is already almost decent

The #Fish shell is soooo awesome on the #Librem5. I highly recommend this on mobile devices where one is much slower at typing. The auto completion is really convenient and makes typing super fast.

Has anyone recomendations for a #case for the #Librem5? I would like to protect mine a little bit better.

Has anyone attached one to there L5 or is there a heat problem if using one?

chrichri,

@zwarf I started using a small bag.

I like that, because the phone is somewhat protected when not used and usually temperature is no problem, because it is not used while inside the bag.

When I take out the phone to use it I do not have to think about temperature, because it's just 'naked'.

I like the pouch, because it attaches nearly anywhere: belt, rucksack and wherever the carabiner works.

#shotonlibrem5, tooted using #tuba, image resized using #imageroll

small neopren pouch the size of a Librem5 or a Garmin GPSmap CSx - front

@scops Also a good idea. Thanks, I will take a look.

I built #PicPlanner on my #Librem5 yesterday to test some design tweaks directly on the phone. The first flatpak build process takes quite some time on the Librem5 but the second time it is much faster.

Having the possibility to test directly on the phone is much better now then just guessing on a laptop how it will probably feel on a phone.
Hopefully I can fix some bucks faster now. Especially the slow touch input.

The "Usage" app is showen where four red lines show that the processor of the Librem 5 is constantly running at 100%. This is due to the build process of PicPlanner.

@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

The #camera of ,the #Librem5 is of course not yet perfectly optimized for example the resolution is still limited to 3.2 MP while the sensor is capable of 13 MP but it is already good enough for documentation purposes. I used it the whole day at work to take pictures of devices and serial numbers. It was perfectly fine even in bad light situations.

dos,

@zwarf @devrtz Remove -s from postprocess invocation in /usr/share/millipixels/postprocess.sh (note that it will be overwritten with package upgrades)

It takes a few times longer at full res though.

First week with my #Librem5 as my only phone. What happened so far:

  • Synchronized contacts and calendar (Nextcloud)
  • Added appointment to calendar and new contacts
  • Made phone calls (nornal, loudspeaker)
  • Wrote, received SMS
  • Used Matrix
  • Browesd the web
  • Listen to music (Aux, Bluetooth, loudspeeker)
  • Made a WiFi Hotspot
  • Wrote a Python script to plot a complicated function
  • Read News
  • Took pictures
  • Checked my location on the map
  • Wrote this post
  • Played games
  • Probably more
al1r4d,

@zwarf is it good?

zwarf,
@zwarf@social.anoxinon.de avatar

@al1r4d For an average user without any knowledge about Linux the #Librem5 is probably a bad device. For somebody like me who loves Linux, likes to play around, has no problems with switching to other workflows if one program doesn't work (Banking, WhatsApp etc.), is ok with charging twice a day and is relaxed enough if there is a bug from time to time then it's an awesome device.
I am 100% sure that I won't switch back to #Android.
It is the fist time I enjoy using my phone.
