Started playing around with and cheap sensors and smart powerplugs (and some , also got some sensors I haven't unpacked yet).

It's been a steep learning curve but it's cool that most of the stuff just works (TP-Link and , Zigbee, (using the Hue Bridge, not directly connected to my Zigbee coordinator). Some stuff this uses the cloud (but can be used locally), other stuff takes out the cloud entirely. (1/2)

Temperature per room
Power usage from Zigbee and ESPhome/WiFi smart plugs.
PIR and door sensor tests (Zigbee)

My bathroom is definitely .

Added in and a for AI/recognition. Still need to mess with that too.

And thanks to I can control/monitor 'smart' devices at my parents and in-laws house as well. (2/2)

is quite cool in the visualisation as well. It's simple (but at times limiting in the UI) -- but quite simple to put together a . I could connect as well but that’s... for (much) later.

It connects with a wide range of stuff pretty much out of the box

like , , and all the usual smart home suspects. Ordered some devboards to try to build a BLE proxy/repeater for a BLE sensor (https://www.simplysmart.house/blog/bluetooth-proxy-home-assistant-epshome). “kinda works" but range seems to be a problem (even with repeaters) and buttons (the button press doesn't always register) or sensors can be unreliable (no update for a long time)

Re: #Zigbee unreliability. This is the Zigbee map in a small apartment in #Singapore. The Star light (Ikea bulb) is unplugged, but the Power Plug Blue isn’t... However it has no link/route to the coordinator or another plug (eventhough it's like maybe 10 meters away from routers and the coordinator). Not yet entirely sure why. (1/3)

Can say that my block storage for is massively growing. A year ago it was stable at ~80-89Gb, but lately it's heading to 200Gb+

Growth past week, cleanup operations lower the storage size but on average it’s growing.

I know is popular amongst Americans 🇺🇸 who travel outside of the country, but I doubt will replace in the 🇺🇸 in the near future.

has already lost to Messenger in 🇺🇸, so in a sense @zuck has already won.

@darnell @zuck as a foreigner I don’t get popularity in the US. The clients are total crap, a lot of features are lacking, the UI is not very nice, it's a hassle to set up if you change sim cards, activating requires SMS (which have roaming fees if abroad), they lock out any non-Apple user (which is a significant portion of the world), etc. (1/2)

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

In Singapore everyone is using #Whatsapp, including businesses, bots are popular (to schedule delivery, order airplane food, etc). Apple is so fixated on the US and keeping control and vendor-lockin it totally missed the boat. Literally no one I know in Europe or Asia uses iMessage (or Facetime for that matter) (2/2)

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@darnell weird, noone I know uses iMessage (in Singapore/Asia).

WhatsApp is super reliable (and you can call freely internationally or do video calls; quality is also good).

I think I prefer FaceTime for calling the parents in BE from SG, because of the iPad app and the quality is a bit less grainy over long distance; but for everything else, Whatsapp is #1 here, and Telegram likely #2 (usually is the more spammy/anti-gov/dodgy corners).

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@darnell
People don't even activate iMessage/Facetime on their iPhones here.

shopee.sg does 2FA over Whatsapp instead of SMS. Every business has a Whatsapp account you can chat with.

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@darnell Maybe they are in a certain (tech?) scene? travel more? but for sure my singapore family and friends of my wife don’t use iMessage at all. You can’t get buy here without WhatsApp. FedEx/DHL/local delivery uses it (and delivery guy will send a picture via whatsapp of the delivered goods etc)

Any reviews/recommendations about the #fuji #x100 (#x100s or #x100t -- the newer gens are double the price)? Looks like a fun and easy to carry camera. Looking for imperfections in the pictures. I know nothing of #photography as well :) #fujifilm

I’m looking for a “thingie” to hand #WiFi access points ~0.5m from the (metal) ceiling. It’s something like this.

What is this called, and where can I buy this?

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@gbraad bit annoying because i need a few (like 30 or so) and can’t really find something that’s affordable, small, easy. There’s project mounts but $$$ and stupidly big/heavy

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@gbraad heh… crazy! I mean I get it, a project/beamer is maybe 10-20kg so this things needs to be sturdy… but that’s silly in terms of costs ;)

yeri,
@yeri@superuser.one avatar

@gbraad The reseller (dectdirect.nl) replied this:

> Wij hebben niet iets kant en klaar, maar wat we zelf bij een installatie hebben gedaan is deze mount,
> https://www.dectdirect.nl/nl/access-point-pro-arm-mount.html
> Gemonteerd aan een witte pvc buis om hem een stuk onder het staal t hangen…

which I don’t think is gonna look nice/proffesh at all. PVC might even break if someone manages to knock something against it (a ladder or something)
