Hey, I'm writer13! I like playing retro and old style games on #Linux. While I mostly write about them before, my new hobby is to stream the games I loved or discovered the past 30 years. I can be very passionate person, and I have distinctive opinion about modern games. #Retrogames are my jam.

Outside of computers, I like reading/writing, gardening, doing healthy stuff (yoga, jogging and weightlifting). And I am interested in psychology.

I dislike Tomb Raider games. I will eventually buy the remastered trilogy just so I can confirm that after all these years I still dislike them. 😅

I last played them half of my life ago. My memories of them seem to be fairly clear, but I'm a different person now. Who knows? Maybe I'll discover something appealing about them. Could happen. 🤷‍♂️

Has this ever happened to you? As in you've grown to enjoy a game years after you originally disliked it? 🤔

writer13_press0451,

@dosnostalgic No, because I usually don't try to play them again. I rarely give something a second chance, although time can put many things into different perspective.

Btw, what do you dislike in TR games? Controls, level design or enemies? These are the usual suspect. I myself had always mixed feelings, which is why I quit after TR2, and not even completed any of them.

after watching doug block's Home Page (1999) documentary a half-dozen times over the past year, i realized how much i missed having a personal home page.

not an itch.io page. not a github repo. not an imgur album.

an actual personal home page full of links to interesting places and people, and a little blog area to write personal stuff in. i haven't had a personal blog since the early 2000s.

i wanted to have some fun, so I hauled my dusty ol' iMac G5 out of storage and installed Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks. i hadn't used any of them in almost 20 years.

i thought it might take me a week to build a home page...

... it took me a year 😅

so this is my little attempt at rebuilding what we lost in the 90s. let me know if you've got a little homepage i can link back to in my hyperlinks area.

writer13_press0451,

@vga256 I also used Dreamweaver and Fireworks, and I was quite good with it despite English is my second language. I even did very popular webpages with it. I always liked tinkering with colors and graphics, but nowadays I am lazy, just setup a css and use Emacs as a website generator, which is comfy, but also somewhat limited.

I hope one day maybe, we get a level editor for Cultic, after Jason finishes the game. Take your time though, you are creating something incredible.

It is one of the best fps in modern times, I haven't had this much fun for a long time. Streets ahead of Doom Eternal imo, but maybe I like it more because of the different style.

I am in the Mines right now, and I am pretty sure I will dream with that music... :)

Sigil II review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqbZYf6taCY

Obviously spoilers for the latest Romero episode for Doom.

I hope he can make a megawad for Doom II, but many people would just like to see him with Trenchbroom and doing Quake stuff.

What is TrenchBroom you say? It is an free and open source level editor mainly for Quake. Supporting all major operating systems.

I finished DOOM (2016) yesterday. Finally had a computer that I can play it with decent details and framerates. Not my first time to play.

I enjoyed the ride, the verticality was just enough. Mars base is top notch, Hell is amazing, featuring some nice scenes. Just played on normal, might go back on easy to collect some achievements. Music is amazing, thanks Mick Gordon!

I still don't feel the need to play Eternal.

I'll write a longer review today, probably.

Finally looks like I can finish Doom 2016. Not because I don't have time or motivation, but because recently I got a better graphics card. Significant upgrade from my GT1030 to a GTX1050ti (still want that sweet GTX1650 before I have to rob a bank for a new machine, hehe).

Game is good, while I have already saw gameplay and story, I still think it is much closer to the original games, than Doom Eternal.

I will write a review on my site this week, probably, in fact I already started.

Finally I unboxed my copy of Doom Guy, John Romero's book.

It is hardcover, beautiful firey colors, some might say, hell-ish. xD

Looking forward to read it. Fonts are a little bit small, but I think then the book would have 50+ more pages. I don't mind reading, I am just getting older I guess.

writer13_press0451, to random

So I got a surprise graphics card, just a minor upgrade over my GT1030 and an SSD, and I do not know what to play. Dirt Rally 2 stays that's for sure (25% of space is gone, hehe). I am currently playing DOOM 2016, and also Prey 2017 (they have to stop naming these after already existing games). I also have Xplane 11 to fly.

I may buy Amid Evil and Cultic, cause the demo plays well finally.

I am overwhelmed right now, and I don't even have time. Haha, this won't end well for my autistic ass.

Today's recommendations from GOG winter sale:

Weirdly Doom series is on sale except og Doom. It's still good option for holidays, just 5 euros plus 30 years of mods.

I watched this again, because why not?

Interestingly Gmanlives doesn't like this episode of Doom, and he privated the video on youtube. I am too lazy to search for it though. I feel like he got burned by the community. As Civvie11 said, Sigil is polarizing. I personally loved it, but I only played it on HMP.

Can't wait to get into the mood to play Sigil II.

writer13_press0451, to DOOM

I am such a lazy person that I run gzdoom from the terminal and I manually add things I want. Like the main wad, the mods and even save directory, in this way, I don't mess up saves at all, since gzdoom can save automatically at the beginning of every level, which is really useful.

In case you wonder, you can use -iwad / -file / -savedir options.

For me it's much faster than drag and drop on executable and such.

Here is the stream Vod of the Romero-Carmack talk for Doom's 30th anniversary, talk starts around the 5 minute mark + 1 minute while John fixes his camera... xD

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2000693432

Quite a good talk, good questions from Mr. Craddock, while chat is having fun too. We had visit from civvie11 (he is a well known retrogaming youtuber, funny, down to earth guy), and Andrew Hulshult too.

Vod premiered on youtube, ended just right now:

my favorite cover of Doom music by Andrew Hulshult:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGK1dr-Ql0w

It has a WAD version and FLAC/mp3 version for gaming and listening purposes.

He also made music for Dusk (which I played before I heard his own take on Doom), and other games as well. Amazing composer!

This is such a fine day, reading many Doom stories of people, watching the legends who made the game talking about it, playing new stuff for the game as well. Could not have been better.

I also ordered Romero's new book (titled: Doom Guy Life in first person), hopefully I can read it, between my Lego building session, while I try to not eat too many Christmas food. :)

I am also back to weightlifting, which will help to boost my mood and health a little bit.

I think lot about open source and digital preservation, and how it affects technology, and how we view technology.

Open source and free software, while about freedom and dare to say a liberal idea, it's also about conservation.

I doubt we would play #Doom so much (maybe on Dosbox), without making the engine FLOSS. It is used in such a way, that it both helps preserving the original game as wit was, and extending it so much that you wouldn't say that it was once Doom. Which is crazy. #doom30

writer13_press0451, to DOOM

And instantly Romero's cam is unfocused for like a minute before he could fix it. Hahha, perfect...

I would make a boomer joke, but at 40 it would be hypocritical from me, when I don't understand 70% of what my nephew says sometimes.

Favorite piece of music from Doom?

"Sign of Evil" hands down. Hearing it first time at the last level of episode 1, you could feel this is not the end of story, and there are bigger things to come. That evil is something that is always present, and the fight against it will continue, and will never end...

Sadly we didn't get a good adaptation of Doom on the big screen, but we still had the best 5 minutes, which is more than most gaming adaptation gets:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmN1Xk1SdwQ

I really don't understand why they couldn't make it a monsters from hell movie, instead of the very generic scientific stuff.

Fuck you John! :)

Seriously that starting era, even at HMP is so good. Even though I watched him making the map (not everything)

This is Doom's legacy:

"Unlike our fragile meatspace bodies, as Doom hits its 30th birthday, there's no sense of "acceptance," and it doesn't look like we're slowing down anytime soon. Not a day goes by when someone hasn't released something new to play in Doom. "

2023 Cacowards is here!

Let's not forget Zero Master's incredible achievement this year. The first person who beat E1M8 on UV Max, truly 100%-ing the level. In the 30 years of existent of the game.

I bought Romero's book today, and I hope it arrives before Christmas, otherwise I have to take my shotgun out and visit the bookstore, that has said: it's available and ships before Christmas.
