I’m a historian and hacker who researches the possibilities and politics of digital cultural collections.

My main project at the moment is the #GLAMWorkbench, which brings together many examples, tools, code and tutorials to help people explore the digital collections of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums.

I wonder what impact changes to Google's algorithm will have on cultural institutions with KPIs based on web visits.

I remember when I was manager of Trove in 2014 or so we had a drop in traffic that coincided with Google changes. Had to include a note in the annual report along the lines of 'Google did something'...

Hey Australian fans, I've done a complete reharvest of all of the Hansard XML files from 1901 to 1980 from ParlInfo. There's been lots of improvements/corrections, and most of the file names have changed (they now have a version flag). The improvements seem to be ongoing, so I'll try to harvest more regularly from now on. You can download the lot here: https://github.com/wragge/hansard-xml

I still need to load the updated XML into the Historic Hansard site, but that's going to have to wait for a month or two...

So #Trove has a new 'Content survey' form for you to fill out. The 'content' in this case is not what's in Trove, but what gets shared by Trove through social media.

Far be it from me to suggest that you might reply 'Examples of research tools and methods for working with Trove data' to the question about what you'd like to see shared through social media.

And yes, Trove's social media still steadfastly refuses to admit that the #GLAMWorkbench and all the associated Trove tools and resources actually exist...

It includes some live examples to play with. https://updates.timsherratt.org/2024/05/15/using-iiif-to.html #GLAM #digitalHumanities #histodons @histodons

I've written a little post about the National Library of Australia's collection of archived websites in Pandora and the new section that helps you to work with the data.

Want to find websites from Australian elections back to 1996? Just go to Pandora. Want all the urls in a spreadsheet? Just run my new notebook.

There's a new version of my app to save a digitised newspaper article as an image. It's now embedded in the , so no need to load anything extra – just plug in an article url and click the button. https://glam-workbench.net/trove-newspapers/Save-Trove-newspaper-article-as-image-app/

It also includes a new option to mask the image. If this is checked the app will try and snip the article out of the page, rather than just cropping to a box around it.

About five years ago I created a collection of full-page editorial cartoons from The Bulletin, harvested from . Through a process that might be politely described as ‘iterative’, I fiddled with an assortment of queries and methods until I had at least one cartoon from every issue published between 4 September 1886 and 17 September 1952 – 3,471 cartoons in total.

Last night, as I was tidying up a new release of the Trove periodicals repository in the , I had a thought – why not put all of the details of the cartoons in a little database and make it available using Datasette-Lite for easy exploration? So I did! https://updates.timsherratt.org/2024/03/19/a-new-way.html @histodons

Ok, draft Zotero translator for PROV collection is capturing item metadata, a link to generate a PDF, a like to IIIF manifest, saving the first page image (if digitised). Anything else that would be useful?

Got an email yesterday from a guy asking if I could change a broken link on a site I managed in the mid-90s. The cool thing was, it was a link to his own site on the history of the totalisator which, after 26 years, he had finally been forced to move from an ozemail user account to a proper host: http://tote-history-atl.net.au/ In amongst the avalanche of new stuff let us celebrate those who keep the old web alive.

Despite the hols, more digitised newspapers have been flowing into #Trove – 308,457 articles added in the last week. In fact, since the 10 December more than a million articles have been added, including 493,309 to the Melbourne Sun, and 578,363 to the Sydney Daily Mirror!

Also a new paper added: The People's Weekly (Moonta, SA: 1890 - 1926).

As of today there are 10,846 files in the National of Australia's database with the access status of 'closed' – indicating that the file is being withheld from public access. This is a decrease from last year's total of 11,185.

Most of the decrease is in files that were previously 'withheld pending advice' (ie the NAA was waiting on advice from other govt agencies and a final decision on the access status hadn't been made).

Other than files that were WPA, 159 files were newly closed in 2023.

Esmond Dorney is an internationally recognised modernist architect who at one stage worked with Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin. His work is poorly documented and there are many houses he designed in that we are not aware of.

@perkinsy You can actually hire the Dorney house for events -- always thought that sunken discussion pit would make a great workshop location! We were lucky enough to go on a tour of the house a few months back.
