I think someone is trying to give me a virus with a tif file. I'm curious as to how that's even possible but I swore an oath about not doing security research so I'm gonna have to avoid looking into it

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone that is interesting. I remember OptiPNG having an overflow, but it was fixed years ago and hopefully doesn't still exist in the wild. CVE-2017-1000229

I got recognized at the electronics fair, but the funniest part is that they didn't fully recognize me at first.

Then I mentioned I was planning to do Terrible Things to a keyboard I bought, and THAT'S WHEN they recognized me.

Apparently my reputation precedes me.

@foone hahaha yep! I knew it was you because who else recreationally commits Keyboard Crimes

@foone and now I'm laughing because this came to mind:

We had a potluck for Critique in ceramics class today. Last class, our instructor passed around a sign-up sheet for foods to bring.

Five people signed up to bring chips. So, naturally, I thought to myself it would be good to bring some dip or salsa to accompany the overabundance of chips.

I brought salsa. Another classmate made five-layer bean dip.

No one actually brought chips.

remembering that time i made a villager spawner and some conveyors that led the villagers into a tinkers construct smeltery to melt the emeralds out of them

actually i forget if that was a spawner or just a group of villagers in the "hot tub" getting healed with something

I'm being told that at least 2,000 people have showed up to the eclipse event at work.

We also have six media outlets on-site, which is pretty darn good. I'm glad I pitched the event to press last week

Two culinary developments are in the LA news this morning.

One is about where you can find the best "flat croissants," which just seem to be croissants that have been ironed completely flat.

The other is about the rise of "fluffy bagels" — orb-shaped bagels with no hole in the middle.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online bagel orbs... B'Orbs... but fluffy.... Fl'Orbs... Fblorbs...

I'm making myself crave one now

vxo,

@MLE_online that sounds excellent. Yeah, the shape doesn't matter to me as much as it just being a good bagel.

lmfao this post got me a "YOUR POST IS MARKED IN OUR SYSTEM AS MATURE" nastygram

It's a picture of my shoe, and I suppose, my foot, the most SEXUAL of body parts, 100% covered in a sock. There's literally no skin in the frame, I did that on purpose

@SirTapTap wow that's an UNUSUALLY good sizing range! Thanks. I was not expecting that somehow.

I'm usually 12 in US womens' sizes, a lot of brands do seem to stop juuuust short like at 11 narrow or something

I wonder how hard it would be to build a reel to reel VHS player

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone is it sad I can already imagine how to do it

There's kind of a spring loaded back tension regulator in the transport, as long as you keep that intact and use it to brake the supply reel you should be good to go. The idea of being able to record like 24 hours on a big reel of tape is appealing

Looks like doors are the hard part of building EVs. Investigation over "intermittent failure of the latch and handle preventing the opening of the driver, front passenger and/or rear doors. " and "emergency override mechanism also fails to open the door" at EV manufacturer Fisker. https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2023/FISKER/OCEAN#investigations

#ev #automotive #doors

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@ai6yr why. why is it so hard to get a DOOR right

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@phaedral @ai6yr lol, yep. I like how electric transit buses just preserved the same exact compressed air driven doors the diesel versions have. The failure mode on those is if you lose air pressure, you can just manually push the door open.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@phaedral @ai6yr now they might be using electric motors on buses that don't have air brakes, but the electric motor driven ones I've seen on buses with hydraulic brakes also have a big red "pull this to release the door whether it wants to or not" override so I dunno. there are no excuses lol

My office spent almost $2,000 on a pan-tilt-zoom iot camera for streaming earthquake press conferences, and it's never been used because it got infected with the Mirai botnet malware after they connected it to the internet.

I don't even see anything in the manual for how to do a factory reset so the camera can be fixed and used again.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online at least that's not quite as dumb as how someone here at my workplace trashed an expensive Teradek wireless HD video receiver by leaving it outdoors for several weeks worth of rainy weather, powered on

foone, to random
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I wonder how hard it is to make my on logitech wireless keyboard.

like, not a keyboard that works wirelessly, that's easy and I've done it already (the cubekeyboard).
but one that works with logitech receivers.

maybe I could buy their cheapest wireless keyboard, destroy it, and then wire my own hardware up to the keyboard matrix?

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone I have always wondered if anyone's ever reprogrammed the receivers. As I recall, one of the flavors of them (can't recall if it's Unifying or another one) just basically has a little Nordic RF mcu with radio receiver and USB interface on it. I never did look into just what the development environment for that was though

's "Detroit People Mover" is such a good song. It demonstrates that electronic synth music can convey feelings other than "party", that it can deeply move people. Even without any lyrics.

Also, I need to get some presets like these. I really enjoy the rich, buzzing, sonorous sounds. That short, repeated melody (e.g. at 1:42) that could very well serve as a PA announcement chime in an empty airport.
