Bought a regular old alarm clock so that my day doesn't start with me reaching for my phone from now on. Here's to hoping this works!

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@nikodunk Nice! I don't think I could get away with that since I have four young kids, but I got an alarm clock that has wireless charging and the phone is kind of tucked underneath the face of it, so hopefully that will limit the sense of need to reach for it first thing 🤞 .

@marlinspike If you like the look and feel of Windows and just want something that generally works out of box, I suggest Budgie. Alternatively, if you want more customizability, go with KDE.

CentOS Stream 8 went end of life last week but CentOS 7 is still supported until the end of the month.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@ivan Nah, but I did migrate a number of CentOS Stream machines to recently. Alma8 is still supported and it's easy to migrate to, even from CentOS 7:

From CentOS 7: https://wiki.almalinux.org/elevate/ELevating-CentOS7-to-AlmaLinux-9.html

From CentOS8 to Alma8: https://wiki.almalinux.org/documentation/migration-guide.html

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@ivan Here's the short list:

  • Consistently faster time-to-live
  • More open source participation, especially upstream (Fedora, EPEL, CentOS Stream)
  • More focus on productive collaboration than picking fights on the internet

That said, there are some good people at Rocky and I'm not telling you not to use it, but these are my reasons.

I've decided to try again as a alternative. I don't like the interface as much and the ads are not intrusive, but I like that it has some integrations with and . There's also apparently a YouTube integration, but it failed to connect for me.

This right here is the biggest immediate threat to vehicles. The base pricing of $72k means you've limited the market to well off enthusiasts who are willing to take a gamble but maybe weren't sold on a Cybertruck. The base price is going to need to be less than half of that before most people will seriously consider looking at it. This is a mall crawler for a Silicon Valley commuter.

I'm not sure which part of this is the most depressing. This doesn't include what I paid in insurance premiums or all of the out of network stuff that are still pending and/or I haven't submitted claims for yet.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

By the way, this doesn't mean that my insurance actually paid that difference. Much of their actual cost paid is negotiated significantly lower than the initial provider billed price.

vwbusguy, to fedora
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

One thing that would certainly make the initial experience of running #Atomic #Fedora better for seasoned #Linux users is having the dnf command exist and grok rpm-ostree out of box. I understand why this is the current experience, but there's definitely room for improvement here:

dnf: command not found

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@jwf It's a real problem. I had someone come by my office a month or two ago and we were talking about some program and while he was looking over my shoulder, I found out it didn't have a flatpak and I didn't have dnf so I had to enter toolbox to search for the package name, then rpm-ostree to install it, and then reboot. It wasn't a great first impression for what is usually a wonderful and practical experience with Kinoite.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@antnisp @jwf It depends... Toolbox/Distrobox for GUI does indeed work for some things, but not everything. There definitely needs to be less guesswork involved as to what is likely to work from where.
