So I’m trying to write some little static designs with py5 in Thonny, and when I run the program, the sketch window opens but closes immediately, so I can’t really see what I’ve drawn. It only seems to happen when there is no “def draw():” component in the program (so, non-animated programs which only have the “def setup():” part). Is there a setting somewhere to tell Thonny to keep the sketch result open after running?

@villares@ciberlandia.pt avatar

Hi @mitten, I'm sorry you are experiencing this, I saw your screenshot, I understand you are on a Mac. I think I saw this issue with some students on Macs
:(
One workaround is to add this to your code:

def draw():<br></br>    pass<br></br>

Not ideal, but works while we try to figure out this issue. Welcome to the py5 community! If you have the time, maybe open an issue at github.com/py5coding/py5generator, I'm looking for Mac people to help us investigate Mac issues!

Another strategy would be to use static mode (no setup or draw, size() has to be first) maybe it couk also suit you in this case.

@mitten @InstantArcade wow, this is new information! Thanks for sharing!

@villares@ciberlandia.pt avatar

@InstantArcade @mitten yes there is some magic going on, even in "module mode", even without Thonny, but specially in "imported mode". The plug-in runs the equivalent of the run_sketch CLI tool.

I’m looking for assistive technologies (software or hardware) that could help someone with limited hand mobility control their computer and/or phone. One of their biggest difficulties at the moment is typing for long periods of time. Bonus points if it’s free and open source, but I’d like to offer them as many options as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

@anna @lffontenelle I recently saw a thread about this, but I can't find it anymore :(((

@anna foi exatamente isso, obrigado!

Fun Overpass-Turbo query for #OpenStreetMap: a map of all the K2 and K6 series telephone boxes in London.

Just in case you want to take a red phone box tourist photo and the Tube is screwed or there's a marathon or whatever on and the usual toursity ones in Parliament Square/Covent Garden aren't accessible.

You can also move the map location and re-run the query to find them anywhere else (including the ones outside the UK).

Would anyone know of an offline -like editor for , that is, something with blocks like , but to run programs on a normal local Python interpreter?

Update: It seems that is based on , but the later is more well known, so I edited this toot to make it more "findable". Also, I asked a question at the blockly email forum, let's see if someone answers...

villares,
@villares@ciberlandia.pt avatar

@mdione Hi Marcos, people have done quite some Python with blocks already... sure it is a subset, but it is possible to map all the most important constructs. Have a look at https://hourofpython.trinket.io/from-blocks-to-code-with-trinket and https://think.cs.vt.edu/blockpy/

A #Dreamhost tip, I learned the hard way... if you forget you host a friend's site that is using an old PHP version (like, before 8.0) you'll pay an extra USD 5 every month, billed as PHP extra support or something. Ouch! Just update the PHP version :-S

Fuck anyone who thinks rocking up to work alongside others when they have COVID is ok (including Lady Gaga).

Also, the idea that she gave support staff the choice with full disclosure? Laughable given the power dynamic and what would likely happen to someone who said no.
